10 Day Backpack, Continental Divide:
This trip is for those who want a more rigorous, extended trip into the backcountry. The mileage per day is a bit more with the longest day being a 12 mile hike.
Even though we can't give you and exact itinerary for the trip we generally hike along the continental divide on the Highline trail for part of the trip. You'll be carrying about 40 to 45 pounds while hiking in subalpine and alpine terrain amongst Glacier's towering peaks. On the trail, your guide will point out features of interest, identify flora and fauna and be on the lookout for wildlife. You'll be camping in Glacier's backcountry campgrounds where your guide will help you set up your tent if need be. Our guides are great backcountry cooks so you'll enjoy delicious meals, and you'll be able to relax and rest after a challenging day of hiking. All of the campgrounds are located by lakes or streams which offer opportunities for swimming. On the 7th day of the trip you will be met on trail by one of our employees who will hike in some re-supplies so that your guide can keep up their cooking skills with fresh food.
Granite Park Chalet: 3 Day Hut Hike:
This trip offers the best of both worlds. You'll experience the beauty of the backcountry in the comfort of a historic stone chalet without having to carry a heavy pack. Our guides love this trip because it allows them to demonstrate their extensive knowledge of Glacier and practice their culinary skills using a fully equipped kitchen. The likelihood of seeing wildlife is excellent and the wildflowers are abundant starting the middle of July. Grizzly bears, big horn sheep, bald eagles and marmots are often seen from the chalet and on the hikes.
On the first day the 7.5 mile hike on the Highline is moderately strenuous with the trail undulating a couple of hundred vertical feet at a time. You'll be hiking in an alpine environment with wide open views of the majestic peaks all around you.
There are several day hikes to choose from on the second day of your trip. A favorite is the hike up to Swifcurrent Lookout which sits on the Continental Divide offering one of the best views in Glacier. You may also choose to hike to the glacier overlook looking down onto one of the largest glaciers, Grinnell Glacier.
On the third day you'll hike down the Loop Trail, a 4.5 mile hike descending 2,200 feet to the Going to the Sun Road. Facilities: The Chalet and adjacent Annex provide 12 rooms, all with single bunk beds sleeping two to six people per room. We try to accommodate group privacy, however, there are no guarantees. There is no electricity at the Chalet; flashlights or small battery lamps are recommended for night use in your room. No open flame cooking, lighting or heating is allowed in rooms. There is no running water or shower facility at the Chalet, however, filtered water is provided. Weather and Clothing: The weather in Glacier is very unpredictable. The average temperature in July and August may range from 20 to 80 degrees F at the Chalet. Keep in mind that the evenings are usually cool throughout the summer and warm clothing is needed. Sudden rain, snow and thunderstorms are common and you must be prepared for mountain travel. We recommend at a minimum you have: polypropylene long underwear top and bottoms, a polar fleece jacket, wind and rain pant and jacket and warm hat and gloves. Synthetic layers provide the best performance to avoid hypothermia and the elements.
