Tour Itinerary:
Day 1 - St. Mary's Valley - Showers Available. Meet at Rocky Mountain Lodge at 7:45AM, shuttle to Glacier National Park to start the breathtaking drive up the Going to the Sun Highway. Stop by the Logan's Pass visitor center with a stroll on the boardwalk looking for Big Horn Sheep or Mountain Goats, then to the trailhead. Hike 6 miles with moderate elevation gain through meadows of Glacier Lillies surrounded by towering peaks. Then stop by the Historic St. Mary's Ranger Station to see how the first park rangers lived, before heading back to our Aspen Parkland Camp for an evening of star watching and cooking’s mores. Today we will discuss the ecological zones of Glacier, why Glacier is a World Heritage Site, and an International Peace Park.
Day 2 - St. Mary's Valley- Showers Available. Short van Shuttle into the Many Glacier Valley, known for its wildlife. Today we can day hike to Ptarmigan Falls 4.8 miles and 600 feet elevation gain round trip or continue on to Iceberg Lake 9 miles with 1000 feet elevation gain round trip. Or today can be a relax day where you can, on your own rent a rowboat, go for an hour to full day horseback ride or relax at the historic Many Glacier Hotel. On your own activities costs are your responsibility. Today we will discuss Glaciation and the clues left behind, and the history of the Native American in Glacier.
Day 3 - Two Medicine Valley. This morning we head out on the plains to visit the Museum of the Plains Indian and possibly view buffalo. In the afternoon we will take a scenic boat ride on the "Sinopah", a historic boat across Two Medicine Lake. From there we will hike to Twin Falls and then along Two Medicine lake to our camp site. If time permits we can relax by the lake and rent a canoe or visit the fireplace where FDR gave one of his famous fireside chats. Today's topics will include Lewis and Clark and the history of the Great Northern Railroad in Glacier.
Day 4 - Two Medicine Valley After enjoying the sunrise on the lake with our coffee, we will dayhike from our camp site either to Rockwell falls (3.4 miles, 250 elevation gain/loss), or Scenic Point (10 miles, 2,200 elevation gain/loss). Once we finish hiking, there will be time to go for swim in the lake or to catch up on a post card. Today's discussions will focus on Leave No Trace Ethic and Living in Grizzly Bear Country. We will discuss what measures a community can do to provide a safe environment for both people and bears.
Day 5 - On the River Today we launch on the Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Flathead River for two days. Here we escape to life on the river, falling asleep to the music of the river after a day of floating, swimming, and skipping rocks. The aqua green water carries our rafts with all of our equipment while we have the option to paddle or be rowed down along the border of Glacier National Park. Camp is on the river. Topics of discussion will include river ecology, camping in the wilderness, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex and swift water rescue.
Day 6 - Back to Whitefish. After enjoying our coffee and hearty breakfast by the river, we enjoy a scenic float for the morning looking for Osprey, Bald Eagles and possibly a Moose. After a picnic lunch by the river, each person will have the option to head into the John Stevens Canyon for the class II and class III rapids, a great beginning whitewater section. Then back to Whitefish for a drop off at your hotel by 4 pm. Sample Meal - Meat and Veggie Lasagna, garlic bread, Caesar salad, chips and salsa, Dutch oven brownies.
