Enjoy six days of guided walks/hikes through this vast network of trails where we discover an unusual geological beauty that is unique from all other ranges comprising the Alps. Our hikes are within 14 distinct massifs in the Dolomite range. We lead you along the trials that best allow you to explore and enjoy its many bizarre vertical peaks--steeples, pinnacles and towers of white rock soaring from the base of the highest, most brilliant green pastureland in Europe.
Day 1-2: Europe's Highest Pasturelands: We transfer you to a historic mountain village in the heart of the Val Gardena. For two days you'll enjoy the hospitality of the Italian-Tyrolian culture that for centuries has lived set into a unique geology that comprises some of the oldest rock in the Dolomites. The illuminating red sandstone here was formed long ago from an ancient lagoon and now entertains us with the day's changing light. After an attempt to absorb this distinct mountain atmosphere rife with hikers' tales, we transfer by cable to a high walking trail where during our warm-up loop you enjoy a spectacular panorama of the Dolomite range, including the most notable of these massifs, the famous Seiser Alm. Day 2 takes us up to the Seiser Alm, a magnets for mountaineers wishing to explore a region whose landscape is often described in architectural terms such as towers, curtains and walls
Lodgings: Two nights 4***Inn with Sauna and whirlpool.
Day 3: Ladin Culture: The peaks we hike amongst today loom above the Tyrolian Val Badia, and are located in the Parco Puez Odle. The region is well-known for its ancient Ladin culture and rife with countless local legends. We start from Heiligkreuz (S. Croce) where the trail varies from elegant fir trees housing a wide variety of bird life to a haunting rocky terrain of high elevation. The Ladin ancestry is locally traced to 15 B.C. and today the language is still taught in school while laws are in place to protect this rich cultural identity. Each alpen village we pass shows evidence of its traditional woodcarvings. Today we have the opportunity to start together then split off into several directions after we lunch at one of the mountain lodges serving up traditional Ladin fare. Lodging: 3*** 2 days at a lodge within Canazei
Day 4-5: High Passes & Cinque Tori: The morning takes us into the heart of the Dolomites where we take a tram up to the Col Rodella. This is our last look at the Sella group and our first glimpse of the eastern edge of massifs. One of the highlights of todays hike is the wide variety of wild flowers. We are sure to see patches of the illusive edelweiss as we skirt the grazing herds of sheep. On day 5 we start with a hike along the base Marmoldada glacier. We then have the choice of descending down through the Fanes Valley or into the long Travenanze Valley to Cortina (trails are dependent on what you choose after discussing the possibilities with the guide). Either choice is bound to conjure up images of fairy tales as we continually enjoy the many colors and towering peaks along the way such as the Cinque Tori. The end of the day brings us to famous Alpen town of Cortina, surrounded by 4 major tofane-peaks, one of which was the first peak within the Dolomites to have been surmounted by a woman in 1874. It was also the setting of the 1956 winter Olympics and still retains this magical air.
Day 6-7: Cortina: Today we enjoy my favorite part of the Dolomites, the Parco Naturale di Sesto, where the Drei Zinnen/Tre Cime (maybe the most famous peaks in the Dolomite range) are situated. This massif stands alone with no other peaks in the immediate vicinity, which accentuates its height and beauty. While the name indicates three towers, there are actually six named towers, from West to East. Due to the easy access to the base of the Drei Zinnen/Tre Cime we have the opportunity to get a close-up view of one of the most famous rock-climbing peaks in the world and will most likely see more than one adventurous soul scaling these vertical faces. Along our path there are many WWI bunkers and we hike high up to one of them that now serves as a starting point for the many rock climbers and those venturing along the via ferrata. At the end of our hike we should have time to visit Lago Misurina or visit the geological museum and stroll the active center one last time. On day 7 you will be transferred to the station in Cortina.
