This route is designed for anyone able to walk up to 6 hr./day on trails that may include steady 2 - 3 hour climbs. However, for those who wish to take it easier on any given day, we have designed alternative routes and shortcuts along the way so that we may divide and regroup. You'll cross over 5 passes during a continuous hike that explores the unusual beauty of the Swiss Alps. Hike from one valley to the next while spending the evening in 3-star village Inns.
Day 1 & 2: Unspoiled Villages: We begin in a small village of wooden architecture typifying the Berner Oberland. Our first full day of hiking takes us past the cow farmers, through gorges and forest, along streams and across open slopes dotted with old barnyards decorated with prize cow bells. We walk into a region known for sulfurous thermal waters and to the base of a beautiful waterfall at the far end of a glacial valley where our Inn awaits us.
Day 3: Gentle Nature & Glacial Valleys: Cross over a pass that leads along an ancient mule trail. The views open up across the Simmen valley of the impressive Weisshorn & lofty glaciers. Once we reach the Hahnenmoospass we ease our way down along a stream through a peaceful mossy forest to a traditional mountain resort for the night.
Day 4 Craggy Narrow Pass & Serenity: Although relatively short in distance, a long ascent makes for a full day of hiking. We hike into a lush forest, through a screen-filled gully and to a rocky pass laden with snowfields. The serenity amongst these layered rocky crags and giant massifs are truly incredible. At this higher elevations a magnificent panoramic view of two glacial valleys opens up and if we're lucky mountain cibyx offer a great photo opportunity. Equally spectacular is our hike down into the valley through small pastures, lush forest and waterfalls
Day 5 & 6: "High Doorway": We spend a day off in a favorite gathering place for hikers. Several options are available from enjoying the local color to spectacular day-hikes. Well-rested we are ready to ascend to the "high doorway", a stunning pass high above the tree line. Before our ascent we stop at the Oeschinensee, considered by many as Switzerland's most beautiful Alpine lake. The rugged beauty of the Alps is unparalleled, a hiker's paradise.
Day 7-8: Shear-walled Valleys & Our Final Pass: Our last day is spent hiking along trails that are favored by many of our Swiss friends. The beauty is continuous and the sense of this being our final day is hard to believe. We make our way to a pass that leads us into the Lauterbrunnental, a shear-walled valley within the Interlaken region--abundant in waterfalls, glaciers and tourist. Transfer to Interlaken station on day 8.
