Just one month out of every summer we offer people the chance to join our 7-day equestrian journey across the Andes. This trail was once the only link between Chaiten and Futaleufú; used by locals and police officials up until 1975, when the Carreterra Austral finally opened. On this trip we will camp out in the Patagonia wilderness and experience sights and terrain rarely seen or traversed by humans. This vacation is a very unique experience we want to share with those who love long horseback trips into remote wilderness with a unique cultural experience.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and introductions
Arrive in Santiago to start your vacation and connect to Puerto Montt. In Puerto Montt you board your 40-minute flight to Chaitén, a flight back in time. We will meet you at the airport where we start our drive across the Andes: volcanoes, fjord-like lakes, hanging glaciers and the turquoise rapids of the Futaleufu river. We arrive in Futaleufu and are taken directly to our working ranch. You will be met with wine and cheese around the wood stove.
Day 2: Orientation to the horses.
We wil have an early start and after breakfast we walk to the barn for an introduction to your horse. We make sure all your tack fits well and ride off for a training ride to Piedra de Aguila and the rock outcropping overlook. Afterwards, with our horses load up we will begin our trip across the Andes Mountains.
Days 3 - 7: Traversing the Andes
The next five days will be spent crossing the Andes Mountains from the Argentine border to the Pacific Coast. Participants will ride through temperate rainforests, high mountain passes, past overhanging glaciers, extinct volcanos, and waterfalls, and traverse swollen rivers and streams. In the higher elevations the group will likely encounter cold temperatures and snow eventhough the trip is taking place in the high Patagonia Summer. The traverse will involve wilderness camping in very remote regions. All of the gear will be carried on pack horses. The group will arrive in Futaleufu on Friday afternoon or evening.
Day 8: Farewell breakfast & departure
Wake up for an early breakfast and drive back to Chaitén. As you catch a final view of the Río Futaleufu; surrounded by hanging glaciers, take a moment to reflect upon all of the amazing sights and experiences of last week. After all these years we are still stunned that views like these exist. Fly to Puerto Montt, Santiago and onward towards home.
