A sea kayaking paradise - Chiloé Island is the largest island in Patagonia (and in South America) with two unique cultures populating its eastern and western shores. The center of the Isla Grande de Chiloé is divided by the gently sloping mountains of Chile's costal range. Chiloe's western side, situated along the South Pacific Ocean in the Chiloe National Park, contains wide expanses of protected beach habitat & temperate rainforests. On the eastern shore, along the Golfo's Ancud and Corcovado, lie the scattered islands of the spectacular Chiloe Archipelago; a perfect destination for intrepid sea kayakers.
These isolated leeward islands are sheltered from the Pacific gales. You will encounter a unique cultural region known for its excellent seafood, intricate woolen handicrafts, fleets of moored yellow fishing boats, elegant wooden churches built by the Jesuit Order, and Chiloe's famous palafito houses (stilt houses) built above the tidal zone. A fantastic Chile sea kayaking trip & adventure on the other side of the world! (No Camping or sea kayaking experience required. An overnight stay in Puerto Montt will be required.). Tour Itinerary Day 1: Arrival and Introductions to Dalcahue Our Patagonia sea kayak representative meets you upon your arrival to Castro on the Island of Chiloe, prior to 12:00 pm. Introductions are interchanged as you sit down for lunch in a typical restaurant at the port. After a visit to the handicraft market, we depart for our Sea Kayaking Lodge, near the town of Dalcahue. For the rest of the afternoon we have kayak instruction and practice in the smooth waters of the Dalcahue Channel. After dinner and a relaxing bath in a wood-fired hot tub, we spend the night at our Sea Kayaking Lodge. Day 2: Sea Kayaking - Dalcahue and Mechuque Island This morning we sea kayak Chile's Dalcahue channel to the town of San Javier in Quinchao Island or, depending on the tides, to Curaco de Vélez. Lunch will be offered prior to boarding the ferry to for Mechuque Island. On arrival, we check into our guest house, then take a walking tour through the village. We cross the picturesque foot bridge over the inlet, and trek up to the vista point on the hill to view other nearby islands of the Chauques group. From here we will get a view of tomorrow's sea kayak Chile day. Day 3: Sea Kayaking - Chauques Islands Today we start early for a full day of sea kayaking among the islands of Añihué, Taucolón, and Voigüe. At noon we find a quiet spot for a picnic lunch. Trekking options around these islands are possible. In the evening, the Mechuque guesthouse treats us to a succulent curanto clambake, Chiloe's most traditional dish. This is Chile sea kayaking at its best! Day 4: Departure After an early breakfast, we take our places on the ferry ramp to catch the boat for Dalcahue. A quick shuttle takes you to the Castro airport for your flight back to Santiago, unless you decide you just can't leave and want to go to Futaleufu for more fun in "The World's Greatest Playground!" You will have just experienced in one week what some folks won't experience in a lifetime. Notes: Included: All local transportation, shuttles, food and lodging while on your sea kayaking vacation with us. All kayaks and Chile sea kayaking equipment specified in the packing list.
