We start by assessing your paddling skills and based on that, your instructor, along with your, input will develop a personalized kayak instruction program for the week. Our goal in this kayak school course is to discover what is holding you back and to take your kayaking ability level to a higher plane. In this course we often specialize in bomb-proofing your kayak roll, learning to roll on the off-side, high and low bracing strategies, precise ferrying, kayak lean, and control & draw strokes. The precise syllabus will be determined by you and your instructor. This kayak school course makes extensive use of video tape feedback and analysis.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and introductions
Arrive at either of our entry points in Puerto Montt, Chile or Esquel, Argentina, the gateway to Patagonia. Connect with our paddling school representative and travel to the remote riverside town of Futaleufu, surrounded by majestic mountains. You will find your accommodations at our comfortable inn and town cabins, and unwind from your trip with a hearty welcome dinner at the kayak school lodge.
Day 2: Evaluation Day
After an early breakfast, we are off to the turquoise Rio Espolon, a Class II/III river that will allow us to evaluate your strokes, skills, and teach basic river theory. This will be your opportunity to identify what is holding you back in the sport of kayaking and develop a plan to correct it. We emphasize boat control, body position and the strokes commonly used in kayaking. After taking out, we return to our lodge for an overview and analysis of your technique, developing the schedule for the following days.
Days 3 - 7: Customized Kayaking Schedule
From our skills assessment and your input we design a kayak instruction week that will be completely centered on improving your kayak skills. We get to choose from all of the great rivers and runs in the Futaleufu River Valley.
Day X: Optional Multisport Day
If you so desire you can take a day off to explore this remote region of Patagonia and the warm culture of the town of Futaleufu. You can choose from: whitewater rafting, sea kayaking, mountain biking, trekking, horseback riding, fly-fishing, or canyoning.
Day 8: Departure
Wake up for an early breakfast and drive back to Chaiten, Chile and your flight to Puerto Montt, or relax for a couple of hours and take our shuttle to Esquel, Argentina. As you catch a final view of the Río Futaleufu; surrounded by hanging glaciers and snow capped mountains, take a moment to reflect upon all of the amazing sights and experiences of this past week. After all these years we are still stunned that views like these exist.
