It is the usual starting point for pilgrimages to the many holy sites in the area. The Yumba Lagang is the first castle erected in Tibet. In the remote eastern corner of the Lhasa-Tsethang region is Lhamo Lhatso, the "life-spirit" and "oracle" lake sacred to Gyelmo Makzorma, the wrathful protectors, Pelden Lhamo. Each Dalai Lama was to visit this lake at least once in his lifetime.
