This 8 day tour starts by following the Thames Valley to Oxford and then on through Shakespeare country and into the Peak District. From here we go North to the City of York and into Scotland for two nights before turning south into the Lake District and Wales. Then finally through the historic villages of the Cotswolds and back into London.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: 12.30 pm: after a full briefing on how to get the most out of your car, take the road west out of London to Henley-on-Thames and follow the Thames Valley through the small town of Wallingford. Arrive late afternoon in the University City of Oxford and your hotel for the night, the Oxford Hotel. (D).
Day 2: The first part of the day will take you through Shakespeare's home town of Stratford-Upon-Avon. Later that day follow the road to the Peak District with its steep hills and quiet valleys, then stopping briefly in the small agricultural town of Buxton before finishing the day in Hellaby. Overnight at the Hellaby Hall Hotel, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, originally built as a 17th-century Manor House. (B/D).
Day 3: From Rotheram follow the road to Doncaster and on to the City of York. York is an ancient Cathedral City and the best way to see its tiny lanes and medieval architecture is on foot. From York drive north over the moors with its wonderful panoramic views and wide open roads to end the day in the small village of Redworth. Overnight at the Redworth Hall Hotel, a typical Victorian Grand House and now a 4 star hotel. (B/D).
Day 4: The first stop today is Durham Cathedral, then follow the open road across the Northumberland National Park and cross into Scotland at the village of Carter Bar. Drive on across the Scottish Lowlands and follow the signs to Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. Overnight at the Carlton Hotel, in the very centre of the city and now probably the best hotel in Edinburgh. (B/D).
Day 5: Staying in Edinburgh for two nights you can choose between a relaxing day visiting the castle, Holyrood House and just sightseeing or drive to an area called The Trossachs. This area is famous for its mountains and lakes and of course its whiskey distillieries. Overnight at the Carlton Hotel. (B/D).
Day 6: A morning drive back into England taking the road into the Lake District. This area has been the inspiration of many poets and writers, including Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Pass through the small towns of Keswick and Kendal to finish the day at the southern end of the lakes. Overnight at the Burn How Garden House Hotel. (B/D).
Day 7: Keep driving south and follow the road along the Welsh borders between England and Wales. This part of the country was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution and our route will take you to Telford with its marvellous museum. From here take the road to the Georgian and Regency town of Cheltenham. Overnight at the Queens Hotel. (B/D).
Day 8: Breakfast at the hotel and then follow the road to Cirencester which has been a market town since Roman times. Then follow the route map which will take you to Lechlade, Faringdon and on through the Vale of the White Horse to Wantage and Reading. Then back into central London to arrive at around 12.30 pm. (B).
