Among the Frontier Settlers some five generations ago, our families settled in the Eastern Cape to farm sheep and cattle on the wild and often hostile Zuurveld. We are still here in the now historic and hospitable Frontier Country. The haunting cry of the fish eagle echoes through the rugged krantzes, and the veld grass whispers with the roaming of Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Cheetah, Giraffe, Zebra and numerous other antelope. At Amakhala you can experience the delights of the African bushveld while on safari, bushwalk, river cruise, mountain bike, horseback, or simply with a glass of wine from the veranda of your lodge. Here you will also experience the warm hospitality of the settler family descendents, who run The Heritage Collection of lodges, and you may discover some of our little "secrets"; like the prehistoric bushman burial ground, or the site of Africa's most ancient dinosaur fossil finds.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Cape Town where you will be met by our local representative who will assist you with the collection of your rental vehicle and run through your programme with you and assist in any questions that you may have. Then depart from the airport for the short journey into Cape Town, South Africa’s beautiful legislative capital, set beneath the captivating Table Mountain. Settle into your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight on a bed and breakfast basis at the Sea Point Protea 3*** The Sea Point Protea is situated in the cosmopolitan suburb of Sea Point close to the V&A Waterfront. The hotel is also a short stroll to the lively Sea Point promenade, a perfect spot for an afternoon walk and to watch the sun setting over the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel also boasts a bar, restaurant, pool and sundeck and gym.

Day 2 - Day 3: Two full days to enjoy all that this beautiful city has to offer. Whilst you are here you will be spoilt for choice, but whatever happens don’t miss taking the cable car up to the top of Table Mountain for unforgettable views of the city and beyond and don’t forget Cape Point, the tip of the African continent. On a more cultural note, a trip to Robben Island is a must for visitors to South Africa, and why not take an organized trip to visit one of the outlying townships for a view of the “other side” of life in Africa. Overnight on a bed and breakfast basis at the Sea Point Protea 3*** For the culinary inclined don’t miss the cape wine region, with its many famous wine estates and celebrated restaurants. No matter what, you will not be short of things to do!

Day 4: After breakfast depart from the hotel and travel through into the scenic Klein-Karoo a semi-arid region of great beauty. On route why not stop to explore the town of Montagu with its many historic buildings and further on stop for a port-wine tasting in Calitzdorp, South Africa’s “Port Wine Capital”. A short distance further is Oudtshoorn your stop for today, known as the “feather capital of the world” thanks to its thriving ostrich farming industry. The town is dotted with “feather palaces” built on the proceeds of ostrich feathers in the heyday of feather boas and extravagant hats! Be sure to visit one of the ostrich show farms for a insight into these giants of the bird world. Settle into your hotel for the night. Overnight on a bed and breakfast basis at the Riempie Estate Protea 3*** Situated in a farm-like setting on the outskirts of Oudtshoorn, the Protea Hotel Riempie Estate is a charming hotel with well-appointed thatched rondavels, only 20 minutes away from the Cango Caves and moments away from the crocodile and ostrich farms for which Oudtshoorn is famed.

Day 5: This morning make a trip to the Cango Caves, one of the natural wonders of the country with its huge cavernous chambers rich in stalactites and stalagmites! After your visit depart from Oudsthoorn over the Outeniqua Pass to George and onwards through the lake district of Wilderness to the resort town of Knysna. Here stop for a while to visit the lagoon and the “head” which guard the lagoon from the Indian Ocean beyond. From here it is a short journey onwards to Plettenberg Bay and your hotel for the night. Overnight on a bed and breakfast basis at the Keurbooms River Protea 3*** Set amongst tranquil indigenous gardens, you'll find individually appointed rooms designed to fit in with the surrounding natural beauty. Within easy reach of all local attractions The Protea Hotel Keurbooms River is an ideal base from where to explore the garden route and the sunshine coast.

Day 6: Enjoy a full day at leisure to explore this region of great beauty, from the indigenous forests of the Tsitsikamma (where you can take zip-lock canopy rides through the tree tops), to the beautiful beaches of Nature’s Valley or why not spend time at Monkey Land for a walk through the forest trying to spot these cheeky little devils. Alternative take a boat ride out in search of whales and dolphins. Overnight on a bed and breakfast basis at the Keurbooms River Protea 3***

Day 7: Leaving the hotel travel along the coast to Port Elizabeth and from there a short distance further to Amakhala Private Game Reserve. Check into your lodge and enjoy lunch before your afternoon game drive in search of Africa’s big game under the guidance of your professional ranger in open 4x4 vehicles. Return to the lodge for dinner. Overnight on a full board basis at Leeuwenbosch or Shearer's Lodge

Day 8: Enjoy a full day at Amakhala with early morning and afternoon open vehicle game drives. The reserve is home to a multitude of animals, including Africa’s famous “Big Five” – lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo, and your ranger will help you get up close and personal! All meals will be served at the lodge. Overnight on a full board basis at Leeuwenbosch or Shearer's Lodge

Day 9: After a final thrilling morning game drive and breakfast at the lodge it will be time to bid good bye to the reserve and return to Port Elizabeth where you will drop your vehicle at the Hertz counter before your flight to Johannesburg and onwards.
