The country we will be exploring is varied and beautiful. The sub-alpine route we travel gradually gives way to the colorful red rock desert as we descend. The desert canyons literally fall away from the high plateau offering spectacular views of otherworldly rock formations. Wildlife abounds here with deer, coyotes, many birds of prey and the opportunity of a rare sighting of a bear or mountain lion. Once supporting a thriving ancient population, this area is rich in the cultural history of the Anasazi Indians. We’ll explore cliff dwellings, granaries and see many examples of ancient Indian rock art.
Our route begins below the 8,000 foot Bear's Ear Pass surrounded by ponderous pine and follows Elk Ridge, the backbone between the Abajo Mountains and the Colorado River. The landscape changes from cool alpine to colorful desert after our dramatic descent to the boundary of Canyon lands National Park. Our final night is spent at the area's most beautiful campsite, Cathedral Butte. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Please meet in Moab at 8:00 A.M. at located at 1233 South Highway 191.
