Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: La Paz-Challapampa. Drive in a 4WD until La Cumbre Pass (4,770 m). The trek start heading to the Apacheta Pass (4,900 m). Later descent for about 7 hrs from the high puna grasslands to the cloud forest or yungas, passing the Chukura small village, and arrival to the Challapampa Camp (2,800 m) in the afternoon. Lunch on the way. Dinner. Overnight. Includes: (L, D).
Day 2: Challapampa-Rio Jucumarini: The trek will continue through one of the few best preserved cloud forest regions of Bolivia, located inside the Cotapata National Park. The trail descends through a narrow valley showing more vegetation, such as orchids, bromeliads, and larger trees, also colorful birds and butterflies could be seen. This region is home of the Spectacled Bear, rarely seen by visitors. Lunch on the way. After approximately another 7-hour descent, we will reach the Rio Jucumarini Camp (2,600 m). Dinner. Overnight. Includes: (B, L, D).
Day 3: Río Jucumarini-Chairu: Continuing down the Rio Jucumarini valley, forests show larger canopies adorned by bromeliads, mosses and orchids. Bird life will be more abundant. After another 6-7 hour walk, you will finally reach Chairu, at 1,400 m, from where there will be a car transfer to Coroico. Later trip back to La Paz. Private transportation Chairu-La Paz is available to request. Includes: (B, L).
