As a volunteer in Peru, you will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with local people, and to see Peru through their eyes. You will discover a country of amazing physical beauty, home to nearly a tenth of the world's rainforests, a long coastline along the South Pacific Ocean, and the Andes Mountains. For years Peru has been known to international travelers as home to some of the world's greatest ancient wonders, including the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu and the Nazca Lines.
As a volunteer, you'll experience and enjoy a safe and structured program designed to help you truly immerse yourself in the local culture. You'll work side-by-side with local people at dynamic grassroots organizations that provide health, education, employment, and social assistance to the community, enjoy Cultural and Learning Activities such as guest speakers and language lessons, and have ample free time to travel and explore the community on your own. You'll gain an understanding of the complex challenges that the community faces, and join them in effecting positive change.
Our volunteers work at Partner Program, a locally-designed and driven initiative. Our in-country staff forms partnerships with these organizations, working together so the volunteers can contribute to the work of the organization. These may be orphanages and childcare centers, schools, health clinics and hospitals, homes for the elderly, centers for people with disabilities, and other community organizations.
In Peru, your volunteer placement may be:
- caring for infants and children
- teaching children
- teaching English
- assisting teachers
- working towards women's empowerment
- sharing your professional skills/experience
- caring for the elderly
- observing and assisting local health professionals
- caring for people with disabilities
- working with people affected by HIV/AIDS
