Ubinas volcano is the most active stratovolcano in southwestern of Peru. The Ubinas volcano (5672m (18609ft) presents a symmetrical conic and the actual active crater is open in the south sector of the caldera, it has more than 600m in diameter and is characterized by the irregular shape of his borders and by his considerable depth that reaches 307m with respect to the floor of the caldera. In the whole volcanic edifice, the places of gaseous emission are only six zones situated not aligned in the bottom of the crater. The gases are emitted with considerable pressure and noise which is audible up to several hundreds of meters. Seismic activity has been mounting since February at the volcano, about 470 miles southeast of the Peruvian capital of Lima. Ubinas erupted the last April 14th, sending a column of ash some 2600ft into the air.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Arequipa - Chiguata - Salinas Lagoon - Ubinas 07 Hrs. Pick up from hotel and journey in our four wheel drive approximately three hours to Salinas Lake. On the way we will go through Chiguata, located between Misti and Pichu Pichu mountains. During the trip we will enjoy the Misti geological faults, the pre-Inca terraces of Chiguata and Cachamarca sector, Queñuales forest trees and fauna. We will then cross the Simbral tunnel and enter the Reserva Nacional de Aguada Blanca y Salinas. We take in views from the back of Misti volcano, Chachani and Pichu Pichu Mountain, stopping to see the Salinas Salt Lake, Llamas, Alpacas, Vicuñas, Flamingos, etc.

10 hrs - Salinas Salt Lake is over 4400m high. After we will walk surrounding the lake, with many chances to see pink flamingos in season (January - August). After 2 hours walking even for acclimatization we will arrive to Moche Village lunch and couple hours continue driving to the base of the active volcano, named Ubinas. Base camp over 5000m.

Day 2: Ubinas Summit - Come Back to Arequipa 04 Hrs. After good breakfast we leave the base camp and climb up to the evolution of the historically most active volcano in southern Peru - collapse caldera on the summit of Ubinas (5670m) four hours climbing to the mayor crater, from where is nice to see other volcanoes and high summits on the south of the Cordillera volcanica of Peru. From the summit is easy go down into the second small crater, we have chance to look the deep and active point of this active volcano and walk around on small volcanic sand hills.

After 2 hours resting in the crater and exploring this area we will climb up to reach the mayor crater and back descending to the base camp, lunch, packing our gears and 5 hours travel by hour 4WD to Arequipa.

Rain Season: December to March. Some days blue sky with good conditions to climb.

Best Time for Climb: April to November, on the rain season same days are with good weather (blue sky) permitting to climb this volcano. before to book your tour please see the weather report.

Advice for Climbers: To have good acclimatization, good physical conditions and good quality winter clothes. One day before all the climbers will have meeting with the mountain guide at our office or in the hotel, who will give a briefing about this climb and also you can check the quality of the climb gear will be used on the mountain.

What You Need to Bring/Carry:

- Backpack 70Lt minimum
- Sleeping bag -15Cº (can be hired from our office for US$4.00 per day, in Arequipa)
- Windproof jacket
- Strong comfortable and waterproof boots
- One complete change of clothing
- Sweater and thermal pants (something warm)
- 4Lt of water per person, minimum
- Flashlight and batteries
- Hat or cap to protect you from the sun
- Sun block (sun protection cream)
- Toilet paper
- Selection of small snacks, chocolate, dried fruit, biscuits etc,
- Camera, plenty of film and spare batteries
- Binoculars
- Your personal first aid kit
- Walking sticks or poles.
