Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Fly to Antananarivo, Madagascar from Johannesburg and arrive at Antananarivo someone will meet and greet you at the airport and drive you to the Perinet/Andasibe reserve. Situated in province of Toamasina between 930m and 1040m of altitude the reserve is complex of protected areas. La Rederve special d’Indri is a reserve especially for the Indri Indri Lemur and also contains other species as well as great Flora. Check in at “Vakona Forest Lodge”. Before supper you can enjoy a nice walk looking for many nocturnal creatures. We thank our agent in Madagascar, for their services & discounted price to make this Madagascar leg of the tour possible.
Day 2: After a nice breakfast you will visit the Special Reserve of the Indri or Mantadia National Park. Park is a mass of rainforest and has a damp tropical climate. Its flora is rich with ferns, mosses, orchids and it also has medicinal plants. Fauna represents no less than 11 endemic species of lemurs such as Daubentonia Madagascariensis, Indri – Indris or the biggest lemurs in Madagascar. You might also discover the smallest chameleon and other reptiles in the park as well as the very colorful Mantella frog which is easily spotted. In the afternoon we can visit the Lemur Island, a small sanctuary where rescued and no longer wanted pet lemurs live in a semi wild state.
Day 3: After a nice breakfast depart to join Antisirabe. Check in at “La Rose Des Vents” and visit the town, you will discover the Mr. Joseph’s workshop where minerals and various stones of Madagascar are displayed. Mr. Marcel’s factory for the Malagasy candy, the Zebus horns factory and Mr. Mamy’s factory for the miniatures bicycle, pousse – pousse, some nice coach and its embroideries, you will visit the factory silk which is very interesting.
Day 4: After a good nights rest continue south towards Ambositra – the cradle of Malagasy art, also called the city of the roses. This is the capital of wood carving in Madagascar; we will visit some workshops and crafts centers. After lunch we continue to Ranomafana and check in at “Setam Lodge”.
Day 5: After breakfast, transfer to Ranomafana entrance park for full day exploring this lush tropical paradise. Created in 1991, to protect primary rainforest, the park contains very rich fauna and flora. Located in an area made up of hills, steep slopes and cliffs, it presents a very significant hydrographic network and has waterfalls and several rivers. The climate is of wet tropical forest. Its fauna consist of 26 species of mammals, 96 species of birds and its flora while primarily green forest has special species such as giant ‘fangeons’ and orchids. Drive to Fianarantsoa late in the afternoon and then check in at “Tsara Guest House”
Day 6: After a nice breakfast, depart to Ranohira, passing by in Ambalavao and its beautiful terrace rice field, visiting the wine factory, the Antemoro paper factory, the silk, have a walk to admire the kind of veranda and its beautiful house then continue to visit Anja Private Park. We will cross the high plateau of Horombe which offers a very peculiar landscape, characterized by a multitude of small palm trees.
We check in at “Jardin Du Rois”. This solid mass of sandstone is one of the most beautiful Malagasy landscapes, incised with vertical walled gorges, generating deep canyons, such as the ‘canyon of the monkeys’ and the ‘canyon of the rats’, forming a bizarre sites. Excursions trekking in the solid mass of Isalo are very popular and depending on your fitness can be made hard or easy: The "natural swimming pool" the waterfall of the fairies’ it is up to you to choose where to go and what to see in this stunning park.
Isalo was classified a National Park in 1962 and covers a surface area of more than 80,000ha. Located between 500m and 1,200m above sea level, it is a sandy solid mass that offers to the glance a single uniform relief in the middle of a great grassy expanse resembling African savanna. A completely endemic flora, in particular made up of ‘Pachypodium’ and ‘aloe’ sharing the territory with lemurs, small reptiles and various insects. It also contains many sacred burial sites of the local Bara tribe who bury their dead in caves among the cliffs.
Day 7: A full day of activities and walks are available in the park.
Day 8: After a morning visit to the park continue on to the coastal city of Tulear a green oasis merging from the dry semi desert landscape (on request a stop can be made at Zombitse for birders). National Park of Zombitse – the forest of Zombitse has been classified a National park since 1997 while sharing the status with the forest of Vohibasia and Isoky. The park is divided into 3 parcels representing an important part of the remains of a dry deciduous forest that once covered the West Coast. 85 species of birds are quoted inside the park such as the Giant Coua but the Appert Bulbul is an endemic species only to be seen in the forest of Vohibasi. For those interested in botany we will stop and visit the Arboretum about 15km before the city, it is a splendid botanical garden gathering most of the endemic species from this park of the south.
Day 9: Day at the leisure.
Day 10: After morning leisure, drive to Tuléar and then transfer to the airport for your flight to Antananarivo. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to Pavillion de L’emyrne.
Day 11: Fly back from to Johannesburg.
