A 14-day camping safari that takes you right into the last true wilderness area in Africa, Kaokoveld - comprising Damaraland and Kaokoland - home to the elusive desert Elephants and of the ochre-colored Ova-Himba. This wilderness camping safari is guaranteed to run, should a minimum booking for 2 guests (sharing) be received. Obviously, the greater the number of guests per booking, the lower the unit costs per person. The safari will start in Windhoek, and end there again 14 days later.
This safari will bring you very close to Nature, due to all-camping accommodation throughout the journey, to experience the true magic of Africa. Venues are carefully chosen to include as much wildlife viewing as possible, but at the same time taking you into the rugged and harsh wilderness areas of Damaraland and Kaokoland, the last true wilderness in Africa! Here you will find no fences or enclosures and the famous Namibian desert-adapted Elephants may be encountered anywhere, without warning. This is also the Only area on earth where the Black Rhino still roams free!
Although sightings of free-roaming animals can Never be guaranteed by anybody, the nature of the landscape allows for open viewing ground. A special treat will be one night at a Cheetah Conservation Farm. Arrangements will be made for you to be invited to the homestead where you will have the opportunity for some inter-action, and very close-up photography, of a few semi-tame Cheetahs. A three-night respite on the banks of the Kunene River in Kaokoland is also included where you have the opportunity to partake of a variety of adrenalin activities - even white water rafting! Work your way back along the central region of this wilderness to set up camp in the shadow of the highest mountain peak in Namibia - the Brandberg.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1: Meet your host at Namibia's International airport and transfer to Windhoek for a short tour of its sights & sounds, before settling into a comfortable bed and breakfast to relax and acclimatize to Namibia. There will be time for camp meal shopping or personal needs before dinner.
Days 2 - 3: Hit the road this morning, traveling due north, and aiming directly at your first venue in Damaraland. Although basic, the campsite offers whatever a camper may need, including meals and a small kiosk. The owner - himself a very well-known safari guide in Namibia - offers a selection of activities that will allow you to explore this pristine wilderness.
Day 4: To shorten the distance towards the Kunene River in the north, stop over at a natural hot spring - a rustic, wilderness campsite.
Days 5 to 7: As your destination today is to penetrate the Kaokoland wilderness right up to the Kunene River on the Angolan border, you will have three full nights' respite in this little African paradise - a welcome sight after a very dry and dusty ride. (Your first encounter with the ochre-colored Ova-Himba nomads of the territory). Adrenaline activities abound, but none are compulsory. Quiet nature walks; canoeing, and even white water rafting; swimming in the pool (river for the Crocodiles). Simply lazing around camp, watching the myriad bird life, are equally inviting.
Days 8 - 9: Besides the possibility of sighting the elusive Namibian desert Elephants at this venue, a pride of nine Lions had recently moved in and decided to make this their home! Several activities are offered by the owners, including night Game viewing drives and a very informative guided Nature hike. While in camp, you will encounter permanent movement of wildlife around the perimeters, all coming from or going to the camp waterhole.
Day 10: Before entirely leaving the northern areas of Kaokoveld behind, today is the stop-over at the promised Cheetah Conservation Farm - and bush bar!
Days 11 - 12: Camp in the shadow of the highest mountain peak in Namibia - the Brandberg - tonight. (The dry Ugab River is another favored "highway" of the desert Elephants). The entire area open to free nature walks, or to join the owner's guided walk or 4X4 nature drive.
Day 13: The day had arrived to leave Kaokoveld, albeit reluctantly, and return to Windhoek. At least we won't "remove" you from the wilderness, and simply "dump" you into civilization. Your venue tonight is a small Game Lodge en-route to the airport. Should you feel up to it, the owners offer a sundowners nature drive where you may have a final view of our sunset on this, your last night in Namibia, Africa.
Day 14: Subject to flight departure time, you may have the entire morning to enjoy a nature walk or simply laze on a pool chair, viewing wildlife at the waterhole. Transfer to Namibia's International airport to arrive in time for your departure flight.
