This camping safari is guaranteed to run, even with a minimum booking of only two guests! The safari will start in Windhoek, and will end again in Windhoek 18 days later. Your itinerary will include the well-known game viewing venue, Etosha National Park, and include Damaraland as well as part of the Skeleton Coast of Namibia and the Cape Fur Seal colony. In the south it will include a visit to some of the highest sand dunes in the world at Sossusvlei; the Fish River Canyon and Quiver tree forest. A camping safari adventure of scenic beauty and wildlife viewing.
The basis of this safari is that we shall provide you with the necessary transport, fuel and driver, as well as tents and roll-up mattresses for the camping; accommodation and Game Reserve permits as well as guidance, leaving you the choice of activities and bodily nourishment requirements. Two days include breakfast and dinner. On the day of your arrival - the night before departure - as well as your last night on safari. For the remainder, you eat what you want when you want to. Maybe organize your own "food-kitty" or something similar. Either restaurants, dining rooms and/or self-catering facilities will be available at most venues.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1: Meet your host at Namibia's International airport and transfer to Windhoek for a short visit to the local shops where you may acquire your first five days' supplies before settling into a comfortable B and B facility to relax from the flight and acclimatize to Namibia.
Day 2: A rather long haul today, but fortunately on a surfaced road. Pitch camp tonight at a venue that is proof of life's long existence on earth - an ancient fossil site, as well as unbelievable rock formations and a "forest" of over 5000 Quiver trees.
Day 3: Continue towards Namibia's Fish River Canyon where you will visit the main view point at sunset.
Day 4: Before entering the Namib desert proper, stop-over at a rustic rest camp to shorten the distance.
Day 5: After another, relatively, long drive through the southern Namib, arrive at a unique campsite, situated in a valley between the Naukluft- and Tsaris Mountains. An early night is suggested.
Day 6: Be woken before sunrise to drive along the Tsauchab River Valley towards some of the highest sand dunes on earth at Sossusvlei. Experience the ever-changing earth-tone hues of the landscape as the sun rises. Return to the entrance, and after a short rest, explore the geologically historic Sesriem Gorge before continuing towards a desert guest farm for the night.
Days 7 - 8: Today you traverse the endless gravel plains of the central Namib towards the Atlantic coastline. This is the premier holiday resort of Namibia. If you are seafood lovers, Swakopmund is it! On your second morning, you are at own leisure to browse the German-colonial architecture; visit shops, stores and coffee bars; laze on the beach (weather permitting), or partake of any number of adrenalin activities on offer by private operators. (Not included in the safari price). Last stop to replenish food supplies.
Day 9: Travel on a salt-surfaced road along the coast towards the notorious Skeleton Coast of Namibia and one of the larger Cape Fur Seal colonies. Opportunity for some real close-up photography of these - sometimes comical - creatures of the sea. Return to the Interior via an old, restored mining town to sleep in the shadow of the highest mountain peak in Namibia - the Brandberg. This is the gateway to Damaraland!
Days 10 - 11: En-route to your next destination, you may enjoy a short, but pleasant, hike through the Twyfelfontein Mountains to view one of the largest concentrations of ancient Petroglyph (rock engravings); wonder at nature's artist at work in the miniature valley of the Organ Pipes, and theorize on the causes of the Burnt Mountain. Late afternoon, evening and entire second day at own leisure to decide on various activities on offer at this typical Damaraland venue.
Day 12: Depart from Damaraland today - albeit reluctantly - as you travel towards the Etosha National Park. Time might just allow a late afternoon wildlife viewing drive after pitching camp.
Day 13: Entire day for wildlife viewing in the Okaukuejo area of the Park. Return to camp before sunset.
Day 14: An early start this morning as you will be traveling through the entire length of the Etosha today, to reach the historic Fort Namutoni. Camp tonight is just outside the exit gates.
Days 15 - 16: Depart from Etosha towards a rustic rest camp. Here you may enjoy Nature walks where you could encounter from the smallest antelope in Namibia - the Damara Dik-dik - to the largest antelope in Africa - the Eland. Besides these Nature walks, the owners of the rest camp offer several activities which include day-visits to a local San, or Bushman, village.
Day 17: Unfortunately, all good things must also come to an end and today you have to return to Windhoek. A long haul, but not to make the transition back to civilization too sudden, you will be accommodated at a small Game Lodge en-route to the airport, with a hot and welcome dinner waiting for you.
Day 18: Subject to flight departure time, you may have the entire morning to enjoy nature walks/hikes on the premises, or simply relax in a pool chair and view wildlife at the waterhole. Transfer to Namibia's International airport, to arrive in time for your departure flight.
