A land between two deserts - a few words so often used to describe Namibia. But the mere word "desert", if not read by someone who knows deserts, conjure up any number of images, normally imaginative or Hollywood induced. To fully explore or understand either the Kalahari Desert or the Namib Desert, would not only require dedication, but probably a lifetime as well. Here, in this short 14-day safari, we have included the highlights and some of the most popular and unique features - literally the tail of each! From your arrival at Namibia's International airport, you have one night to relax and acclimatize to Namibia before immediately setting off into the Kalahari Desert for a 4-night stay. Cross over to the Namib Desert for a 5-night stay in which both the dune sea of the Namib, as well as the endless gravel plains are experienced. End your safari with two nights on the desert Steppe of the beautiful Erongo Region before your return to Windhoek.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1: Meet your host at Namibia's International airport and transfer to a Kalahari guest farm to relax from the long flight, and acclimatize to Namibia. End your day as guest to a traditional Bushman dancing demonstration.
Day 2: A wholesome farm breakfast before joining a Bushman tracker on a guided walk through this section of the Kalahari. Learn about their natural skills and knowledge of the Kalahari desert, acquired over numerous generations. A Game drive is also included and promises a rewarding experience.
Days 3 - 4: Move further into the central Kalahari desert of Namibia. You are now at the site of the longest cave in Namibia. Two days of free nature walks, and after a hearty breakfast on the second day, you should be ready for a cave tour.
Days 5 - 6: Next stop, the southern section of the Namibian Kalahari, where your accommodation will be on the orange/red dunes of this arid environment - so dramatically transformed after the rains. End your first day with a sundowners drive. Experience the stark contrast of the dunes against the azure blue sky during the day, and the gradient tones of the setting sun's crimson hues against the orange/red dunes. Your second day promises an informative scenic drive and guided walks/hikes through the Kalahari.
Days 7 - 8: Cross over from the Kalahari desert in the east, to the Namib desert in the west. On arrival at your Namib venue, relax and make your own comparison between a Kalahari sunset and a Namib sunset. After dinner, you will also have an opportunity for a night Game viewing drive to seek out the nocturnal animals of the desert. On the second day here, a wildlife viewing drive is included as well as myriad hiking-/walking trails to explore.
Days 9 - 10: Moving more towards the dune sea of the Namib, across the endless gravel plains, you will experience another face of the Namib - the vastness and seemingly endless horizon. Don't be surprised if you imagine you can see tomorrow coming! Here, on this soil of the oldest desert on earth, is represented the story of Earth, as portrayed through the awesome results of Nature's essential performance. Experience this timeless desert where the silence of its remote ruggedness, loneliness and desolation sometimes seems absolute to the human ear. Some of the most interesting nature walks/-hikes await you at this venue, as well as a nature drive and excellent cuisine. Should your visit coincide with the period directly after good rains, it will be difficult to believe you are in a desert - grassland savanna as far as the eye can see!
Days 11 - 12: From today, experience a completely different Namib desert as you move directly towards the famous dune sea of the Namib desert. Besides exploring the geologically historic Sesriem Gorge, visit some of the highest sand dunes in the world at Sossusvlei. After viewing and photographing this pristine wilderness with its ever-changing views of earth-tone hues, you will descend and enjoy a scrumptious brunch under age-old Camel thorn trees before you return to camp.
Day 13: Unfortunately, all good things also come to an end, and you must return to Windhoek today. But, the change from the wilderness to civilization will be softened by the atmosphere and comfort of a small Game Lodge outside Windhoek, en-route to the airport.
Day 14: Subject to flight departure time, you may have all morning to enjoy nature walks on the premises or simply laze in a pool chair, viewing wildlife quenching their thirst at the waterhole. Transfer to Namibia's International airport to arrive in time for your departure flight.
