One of the most well-known countries of South America, Brazil is known for the vibrancy and variance of both its people AND its amazing landscapes. The buzzing, wildlife-teaming echoes of the Amazon Rainforest; the dancing, celebrating crowds of the annual Carnival; the arts-surrounded cities of Brazil. all of these grand attractions and MORE await eager travelers and able-bodied volunteers. With dazzling, unblemished seashores dotting the country's coasts and vivacious communities welcoming all who visit, Brazil is an ideal location for anyone wanting to experience "a vida boa" (the good life).

IFRE's volunteer projects in Brazil are located in some of the most desirable locations throughout this prismatic country - including the one-time capital of Rio de Janeiro (home of the annual Carnival and 'Christ the Redeemer'), the northeastern coastal city of Salvador (a city stocked with 17 th -19 th century monuments and UNESCO World Heritage Site) as well as the changing colors and ever-shifting environments and animals of the Amazon Rainforest (boasting more than one-third of the entire world's wildlife). All of these marvelous locations offer ample opportunities for volunteers to contribute to this culture-filled country and its kaleidoscopic people.

Phase One: Free Portuguese Language and Cultural Immersion

Volunteer projects are accompanied by free Portuguese language lessons. All volunteers participating in Brazil 's volunteer projects are required to take these mandatory language classes. IFRE manages 15 hours of FREE Portuguese lessons per week. Due to the language barrier existing in part to the sometimes-difficulty of the Portuguese language, ALL volunteers are required to take these language and culture courses to ensure the highest potential/level of involvement. Volunteers continue to study Portuguese while simultaneously working in their respective volunteer projects for the entire duration of the program (maximum 12 weeks). Volunteer's project times depend on the schedules set by the programs' directors. Some projects begin around 8:00-9:00am in the morning; with some projects having additional hours in the afternoon. IFRE offers free Basic Portuguese lessons specifically to facilitate effective communication while working in the projects.

Phase Two: Work in Volunteer Service Projects

Volunteer Brazil Program: Arrangement of Room/Food/Supervision

IFRE manages living accommodations and three (3) meals a day within a volunteer hostel located in a quaint neighborhood within the city of Rio de Janeiro for the duration of volunteers' assigned projects. The city of Rio de Janeiro is famous for a number of icons representative of Brazil - i.e. the statue of Christ the Redeemer hovering over the city, the spinning colors of the various samba schools ('sambadoras'), numerous beaches, and more. With easy access to public transportation, volunteers have this world-class city at their fingertips. Within these accommodations, volunteers have numerous amenities such as: television, a kitchen, internet services, laundry, etc. Volunteers will receive three (3) local meals each day . Occasionally, volunteers will also be required to prepare/serve their own meals.

Once the volunteer program begins, our local staff members maintain contact with volunteers. We visit our volunteers every 2 weeks (if possible) and you are always welcome at the local office. We recommend volunteers stop by the office once a week if they are in the local area just to let us know how they are doing with their home stay and project. If your project is very far, then our local staff members maintain communication by either email and/or phone.

Start Dates : Volunteers program starts on the following (first and third Monday of each month)
