It is the best way to cruise the backwaters of Kerala however, is in a leisurely laid-back manner with your weather beaten poleman gently gliding the boat across the waters, leaving you time to take in the sights. And the sights are there for the taking. You meander past swaying, kneeling, crouching palms, tiny hamlets, an occasional country liquor shop, a village church. This is virgin country. Time hardly moves here. You can wallow in your thoughts. You can cast a line and catch a fish. You can savour the local cuisine. Or you can just lie back and let the beauty and serenity of what unfolds before you sink in.

In Fort Cochin, there is also the famous Jewish Synagogue built in 1568, and preserved till today. The population of the Jews has dropped drastically with the establishing of the Jewish State of Israel, many Jewish settlers in Cochin and other parts of Kerala left the country for Israel. There are only about 17 Jews left, and that the number of adult males does not come up to the required number for a Priest, the Community is without one. The Chinese fishing nets (Cheenavala) are distinctly unique to Cochin. It is believed that traders from the court of the Chinese ruler Kublai Khan introduced these nets here. Oddly, these nets are found only in Kochi, outside China! Many fishermen earn their livelihood by fishing using these massive nets. A whole stretch of the coast along Fort Kochi and Vypeen are dotted with these nets.
A stroll along the beach, particularly at sunset with the chinese fishing nets and sailing ships in the background, is a memorable experience. Many European style bungalows can be seen along the shoreline. The coastal stretch has loads of small stalls, which make on demand mouth-watering traditional cuisines using freshly caught fish. At its most extensive, their territory comprised some 210 villages, with one of their defensive forts as far as 100 km away.
