Nothing could be finer if you're a photography buff than cruising the Inside Passage with us, your camera, a good supply of film, photo ops at every turn, and a professional nature photographer as your new best friend.

Depending on your own photographic interests, we will guide you to that perfect place and time to allow you to capture the images you've dreamed of. If it's wildlife you're after, we'll follow ethical wildlife viewing guidelines to place you just close enough to enjoy the moment and capture it forever with your camera. If your interests lean more toward flora, we'll help you locate and photograph anything from a tiny, brilliant wildflower in bloom to a 300-year-old Sitka Spruce.

While we offer an incredible array of opportunities for nature photography, it also presents its challenges. The low light of an overcast day, the sudden sighting of wildlife that just won't sit still, or the gentle motion of the boat on the water all present special challenges for the nature photographer. That's why our special photography expeditions are led by a professional nature photographer. If you're a little uncertain about your abilities behind the lens, you'll be able to receive instant "on the spot" advice from a professional on how to make the most of your equipment and ability as you make memories that will last forever with your camera. This special early summer cruise with Rocky Mountain Photo Adventures and Wildside Birding Tours will provide spectacular photo opportunities.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1: Bring plenty of film or tape (or other digital storage) for our yacht cruise through the quiet waters of Alaska’s Inside Passage! Once we settle in, we’ll have a chance to stretch our legs after the long flight and begin to learn about and photograph the area. Petersburg is full of photographic subjects: colorful fishing floats and boats, Norwegian artwork on buildings, and bald eagles.
Includes Meals: (L, D).

Day 2: Today we’ll board the Alaska Adventurer to begin our yacht cruise, each day bringing something new to photograph. We allow the sea, the wildlife, and the desires of our group to guide our explorations, allowing plenty of time for photography and fun! This week, we will be immersed in the photographic highlights of southeast Alaska: changing light, fresh angles, soft clouds or bright sun; possible close encounters with sea lions, bears, and whales; endless scenes of splendor, both on a grand scale and small.

Early June is late spring in Alaska and the land and sea have come to full life for the summer: grasses grow tall on raised beaches with bears feasting in the meadows, and on the marine creatures clinging to rocks at low tide. With the Alaska Adventurer as a stable photographic platform, and using the yachts skiffs and sea kayaks we can approach fairly close to the bears without scaring them as they forage for their meals. Arctic terns, eagles and southeast Alaska’s ‘penguins’, the pigeon guillemots, are nesting, which can create other unique photo opportunities. Tongass rainforest wildflowers are in colorful blossom in June, a favorite photographic subject, and we’ll have plenty of time ashore to capture the beauty of the land.
Includes Meals: (B, L, D).

Day 3: Highlights of the trip might include a hike and walk on a magnificent non-tidal glacier terminus or gentle hikes through the temperate rainforest beneath tree limbs cloaked in moss. Perhaps we’ll explore the tiny world held captive in the tide pools, watch waterfalls tumble down steep mountains, or visit a Native village to photograph totem poles. Clear evenings might yield late night sunsets, brilliant colors illuminating the mountains and creating fire in the sky. In June, we have enough light for photography well into the late evening hours! A delicious meal and a comfy bed will prepare us for another early morning to capture on film. It’s guaranteed that each day will bring a new wonderful surprise!
Includes Meals: (B, L, D).

Day 4: Wildlife abounds at this time of year and we should have great opportunities to observe and spend time with humpback whales in Frederick Sound just returned from Hawaii, and ready to spend the summer gorging in the bountiful waters of the ‘Inside Passage’. Stellar sea ions at haul-outs, Bald eagles flying overhead, Dall’s porpoises, Orcas, and bears – both black and the majestic brown, if we are lucky – may also be observed and photographed. Through it all, Beth will enthusiastically fill us in on the geology, glaciology, and natural history of the animal and plant life of the area, helping us capture these subjects on film and tape, and making the world we see come alive.
Includes Meals: (B, L, D).

Days 5-7: More customized activities.
Includes Meals: (B, L, D).
