This horn-shaped estuary divides European Istanbul. One of the best natural harbors in the world, the Byzantine and Ottoman navies and commercial shipping interests were centered here. Today, lovely parks and promenades line the shores where the setting sun casts a golden hue on the water. At Fener and Balat, neighborhoods midway up the Golden Horn, whole streets full of historic wooden houses, churches, and synagogues date from Byzantine and Ottoman times.
The Orthodox Patriarchy resides here at Fener. Eyup, a little further up, reflects Ottoman architecture. Cemeteries dotted with dark cypress trees cover the hillsides. Many pilgrims come to the Tomb of Eyup, in the hope that their prayers will be granted. Visiting the Church of St. Savior in Chora (Kariye) Museum, a legendary Byzantine church decorated with extraordinary late 14th century frescoes and mosaics.
Proceed to The Pierre Loti Cafe, atop the hill overlooking the shrine is a wonderful place to enjoy the tranquility of the view and drive for lunch at the typical Turkish restaurant. Miniaturk where is showcase of Turkey. The models of over 100 architectural works representing the rich historic and cultural heritage of Turkey, all made in the scale of 1/25 with the aesthetic sensitivity and of an artist, are taking their place in Miniature. Drive to visit The Istanbul City Walls, once an impenetrable fortification, and stretch seven km. from the Sea of Marmara to the Golden Horn.
Recently restored, as also many times before, these walls date from the fifth century and the reign of Emperor Theodosius II. UNESCO has declared the walls during Roman and Byzantine time. Coffee break at Bedesten, exhibiting the traditional silk weaving girls at the carpet weaving courses having authorization from the Ministry of National Education.
