Thanks to a dense network of footpaths (monopatia), or mule-tracks and wider paths (kalderimia) which were built thousands of years ago to allow the local inhabitants to graze their livestock, tend to their fields, pay homage to their patron saints on religious holidays and safely commute from one village to the other, regardless of weather conditions, the Greek countryside is one of the loveliest hiking areas of Europe.
