Close to Italy's northern border with Austria, the Dolomites comprises several spectacular mountain massifs, whose limestone peaks rise dramatically above peaceful green valleys. Popular with climbers and hikers alike, this playground for the outdoor enthusiast is crossed by numerous long-distance pathways.
Our route follows the first amongst these, the Alta Via delle Dolomiti N1, which starts at the Lago di Braies in the north and passes through the heart of the Eastern Dolomites to finish near Belluno. Traversing a weird and wonderful landscape of rock walls and spires, including the fabulous Cinque Torri, we cross rugged ridges, overnight in comfortable refuges and take time out in high meadows where cowbells provide the accompaniment. En route, we have the option to ascend to rocky peaks and several easy sections of 'via ferrata' add to the fun. A diversity of tradition, architecture, language and food adds to the appeal of this stunning trek.
To make this trip not too long and too difficult we have made it a little bit shorter, so that you leave the Highway N1 at the famous Monte Pelmo.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival at Cortina d’Ampezzo meeting with the guide and briefing of the trip.
Day 2: Hike from Cortina d’Ampezzo to Rifugio Fanes passing by Fiames. The track reaches some commemorative rock plaques marking the Austrian 1916 front near the Lago di Fanes, and keeps on winding gently uphill to the Malga Fanes. It’s a short hike to our rifugio.
Day 3: Hike from Rifugio Fanes to Rifugio Lagazuoi. On a good day during rest stops, you can admire the Cime Campestrin, the Monte Cavallo and Fanis. Forcella del Lago is a rocky notch between the Torre del Lago and Cima Scotoni, and leads to a dramatic plunge into a ravine on loose scree.
Day 4: Hike from Rifugio Lagazuoi to Rifugio Cinque Torri. Reaching the Monte Averau we also arrive at the junction of the Alta Via N1 that leads us to the Rifugio Scoiattoli. A stroll away is Rifugio Cinque Torri.
Day 5: Hike from Rifugio Cinque Torri to Rifugio Città di Fiume. After walking amongst scattered boulders and fallen rock, and passing Forcella Col Duro, you have the awesome Pelmo face-on.
Day 6: Civetta massif: hike from Rifugio Città di Fiume – Rifugio Venezia. From our Rifugio we continue hiking along the Highway number one towards Forcella Forada and arrives at Forcella Val d’Arcia. Rifugio Venezia is a historic refuge for the Dolomites, dating back to 1892, it is beautifully placed for views.
Day 7: Rifugio Venezia – San Vito di Cadore- Cortina d’Ampezzo. From the Rifugio we hike down on the Alta Via number 3. We cross the Sass dela Gries and hike towards Ponte della Madonna from where we hike to San Vito di Cadore.
