Day 1: Arrive in Addis Ababa, city tour of Addis Ababa. On arrival in Addis Ababa our representatives will meet you at Bole International Airport and transfers to Ras Hotel. An overview of the program and itineraries will be explained. The rest of the day visit the tourist sites in Addis Ababa including the National Archaeological Museum. You see the Ethnological Museum at Addis Ababa University, Holy Trinity Cathedral and Mount Entoto, which gives you a good panoramic view of the city. Evening you see Addis by night from Wabbé Shebelé, Top View Restaurant or Sheraton Visit.
Day 2: We drive from Addis Ababa to Awasa or we can remain at the Sabana Resort Hotel looking over the pink tea coloured Lake Langano. We can stop off at Lake Zway to see various birds and hippos if time permits. We spend the night in Awasa Town. If we stay in Awasa Town we will remain overnight at Pina Hotel or another hotel of your choice.
Day 3: Bale Mountains - Dinsho Lodge. After breakfast, we start a full day's drive to the Bale Mt. National Park, travelling thorough the southeast part of the capital, where fertile land is cultivated by the Oromo people. We arrive at Dinsho, Park head quarters late in the afternoon. You may see three types endemic mammals: Menelik's Bushbuck, and Mountain Nyala. There are also endemic bird species worth checking from the Birds of East Africa Guide Collins. We spend the night at Dinsho Lodge.
Day 4: From Dinsho we make our way southwest up the Web Valley towards the Finch Abera Waterfalls. The trek is about three hours before continuing onto Mararo where there is the main campsite.
Day 5: Accompanied by your guide and packhorses we trek 5-6 hrs through the highland vegetation to our first campsite, Mararo. En route you might see a number of birds like Wattled ibis, Rouget’s rail, black-winged lovebird, thick-billed raven, white-collared pigeon, Abyssinian long claw, Abyssinian catbird, white-backed black tit, black-headed forest oriole, black kite, augur-buzzard and lammergeyer. Overnight Camping at Mararo.
Day 6: Wasema Valley. After breakfast we resume trek that will last for about 7-8 hrs. The trek offers the chance to see Ethiopia's endemic Abyssinian Wolf. Around Worgona mineral spring, Giant Mole rat can easily be seen. Overnight camping at Wasema Valley.
Day 7: Gebre Guracha. Today you trek through the highlands ascending Sanetti Plateau and crossing Batu Mountain, 4200 meters. Here you have a possible chance to see the Ethiopian wolf*. Wild flowers abound, the dominant plant being the Helichrysm know as the everlasting yellow w flower. You may also see a number of birds of prey such as Lammergeyer, Vereaux’s eagle and harrier hawk. Overnight camping at the base of the valley, viewing Lake Gebre Guracha.
Day 8: Little Batu. Today you trek towards little Batu Mountain, this trek is the day you face back to the head quarter of Bale Mountains. The trek will take for about 6-7 hrs. Overnight camping at the base of Little Batu Mountain. You can extend the walk to the Tegona Valley if you add days to view the cliffs near the Guracha Lake. There you should find the lammergeyers, buzzards, and eagles.
Day 9: Dinsho Loge. After breakfast trek to Dinsho Loge. This last trekking day will take for about 5 - 6 hrs. Overnight Dinsho lodge. We have a campfire, enjoy perhaps board games and talk around the fire about the day’ trek.
Day 10: Drive back to Addis evening Departure. Drive back to Addis Ababa with stops on the way at rift valley Lakes. Evening a fare well dinner party in one of the traditional Ethiopian restaurant with dances from different ethnic groups. Then there is your international evening departure.
Tour Itinerary, Option 2:
Day 1: Arrival - Addis Ababa. Transfer to accommodation. In the afternoon take a tour of the city. We can suggest an evening program. We take you out on the town! Restaurant for quiet unwind. Or Ethiopian nightclub if you wish.
Day 2: Departure from Addis Ababa to Bale Mountains National Park; 425 kilometers from Addis Ababa. See dramatic Alpine style flora. Experience sharp contrasts of scenery from juniper forests to moors and alpine meadows. Expect high altitudes, cold nights. Bring warm clothes and a waterproof overcoat. Sun protection is highly advised. We stay overnight at the Dinsho Lodge. Sauna is available and perhaps it is better than the bathrooms.
Day 3: Full day Bale. We can walk through the park or take the land cruiser according to your wishes. The cook will prepare on site meals. We will try to observe wildlife in the park. It is possible to see Menelik's bushbuck, duiker, mountain Nyala, warthog, monkeys and baboons and Abyssinian red jackal. Parts of the park are thickly forested making wildlife views erratic. We spend overnight at Wabe Shebele Goba Hotel. This is more decent accommodation and a nice contrast to the previous night.
Day 4: Drive from Goba to Lake Awasa. It abounds in bird life. Good sunsets across the Rift Valley. Lakeside walk. Awasa town has a provincial, but interesting nightlife for the first time visitor and the atmosphere is quite relaxed for walking around. Tabor Hill gives a good panorama of the town. Bring mosquito spray and repellents. Restaurants are good for outside Addis Ababa. We watch the world pass by at Pina Restaurant. Stay overnight at Wabe Shebele Hotel or comfortable guest house.
Day 5: Morning departure for Wendo Gunet Forest and hot water springs. We continue to Rift Valley lakes stopping to see flamingos and pelicans. Arriving at Lake Langano we take a boat trip. Next have lunch at the Bishangari Eco Tourist Resort. In the afternoon we make our way back to Addis Ababa. There is a garden barbecue available in the evening.
Day 6: Rest and Recreation in Addis Ababa. You can go site seeing, shopping or museums around the city. You can take the program at your own pace. Otherwise, if you want to be more active we can spend the day in the Menegesha Forest noted for its four hundred year old trees. The forest is reputed to be one of the oldest examples of early conservation attempts. We eat dinner at an Ethiopian restaurant with Ethiopian music and dancing in the evening. Meet some Ethiopians.
Day 7: You have an Internal Flight departure from Addis Ababa to Gonder. View the castles of Gonder. See the Bathing House and Baths of the Ethiopian Kings. View churches if interested. Sleeping at Goha Hotel.
Day 8: In the morning drive from Gonder to Bahir Dar. See Blue Nile Falls in the afternoon. The Blue Nile Falls is still very spectacular. However, some tourists and local guides remark the hydroelectric dam has spoilt the place. Evening in Bahir Dar town. We stay overnight at Lake Tana Hotel. Good sunsets.
Day 9: We take a short tour of the Lake Tana islands churches. The program can be flexible to suit your interests. In the afternoon transfer to the airport for flight back to Addis Ababa.
Day 10: International Departure from Addis Ababa.
- Expect Delays on internal flights to and from Addis Ababa. Bring reading materials and CD player in case. If you have more vacation time, we can do the journey all by road.
