Our 14-day adventure through this country whose romantic ambiance permeates every aspect of its architecture, society and culture begins in Nice, the principle town of the French Riviera. Standing atop battlements in centuries-old castles of medieval fortified towns, enjoying sterling vistas of dramatic valleys and mountains and following historic routes once taken by Napoleon are but a few of the highlights as we make our way through regions world-famous for perfume and cuisine on the way to Avignon to see grand palaces, the 12th-century bridge, the university and other such monumental buildings.
In Nimes, we clamber over the massive stone blocks in one of the best-preserved amphitheatres of the Roman world and then it's on to Provence to get a look at the remarkable Pont-du-Gard, a 2,000-year-old aqueduct constructed entirely without mortar. From Aix-en-Provence to St Tropez, and from Cannes to Monaco, we travel far and wide in this remarkable destination and discover a fascinating mosaic of landscapes and cultures, before heading into Paris to see the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. Talk about ending on a high!
