Intense ocean coastline with an extraordinary cultural heritage and historic significance. Before crossing into Guatemala, we spend time in Copan, Honduras, an ancient ceremonial city unlike any other Mayan settlement and one whose temples, glyphs and monuments receive worldwide recognition for their splendour. It is here, also, that we have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to venture inside a Mayan pyramid. Over the border in Guatemala, we browse the traditional weavings and craft- and artwork in one of the country's largest markets at Chichicastanengo, a cultural hub whose inhabitants are said to be the closest descendants of the Maya, and admire colorful, traditional attire and long-held customs of the indigenous inhabitants of geographically isolated villages. The area surrounding Lake Atitlan yields spectacular volcano-fringed vistas and the colonial streets of Antigua give us a further glimpse into the Guatemala's at-times tumultuous past. Tikal, perhaps the finest of all Mayan sites anywhere, is the last destination on our tour and the perfect finale for this incredible adventure.
