This unique itinerary explores an amazing network of trails through Switzerland, Italy, Liechtenstein, and Austria connecting the ancient migratory routes of the Walser, a people of Germanic origin who crossed over high mountain passes in search of sustainable land and freedom from feudal lords. Centuries later, the Walser communities are still present and active in the Alps, their German dialect is still spoken and their customs and traditions can still be admired at religious services or regional annual festivities..
On our trek, we will explore these trails and remote passages, we’ll pass through villages displaying a wealth of Walser architecture and come to fully appreciate the humble but industrious way of life of this hardy and determined people. Our itinerary takes us from the Goms, the easternmost region in the Swiss canton of Wallis, across the Swiss/Italian border, and into Italy, to the first Walser settlement south of the Alps and the gateway to subsequent migrations. We will skirt majestic glaciers and alpine lakes and enjoy colorful waves of wildflowers, and dramatic views of some of the highest peaks in the Alps will provide the perfect setting for our exciting journey through centuries of history and culture. “The Great Walser Trek” will leave you with lasting memories of a truly outstanding cultural and visual travel experience.
