The large, well-equipped hospital in Binzhou welcomes our interns into a number of medical programs regardless of whether you are currently studying medicine or already qualified. IFRE arrange internship placements so that you can spend time on a variety of the hospital's wards and learn from the expertise of the different heads of various departments. Alternatively, if you want to concentrate on one or two areas of medicine such as pediatrics, surgery or any other specific area just let us know. You could even learn about thousand year-old traditional Chinese medical practices!
This hospital (BMCH) was established in 1977 and has developed into a large-scale general hospital, which specializes in medical treatment, medical teaching, scientific research, disease prevention, health care and provision of professional guidance to the sub-level hospitals and clinics based in the Shandong Province. The BMCH's 1089 personnel include a nursing stuff of 851 and 238 medical staff members offering 941 beds. Approximately over 25,000 outpatient visits have been dealt with per annum by 26 departments.
BMCH is a teaching hospital of Binzhou Medical College. Annually, about 1,000 medical and pharmaceutical students study for their B.D, M.D. or Ph.D., with more than 500 nursing students completing their clinical practice here. Offering both technologically advanced health care while still retaining options related to traditional medical Chinese, BMCH is the perfect venue for interns wanting to observe and interact with a truly unique health care system while learning about China.
Skills/Qualifications:
Interns interested in joining the Medical Internship Program in China must possess health care certification, such as an ID as a medical student, EMT or paramedic certification, or nursing or physician's credentials. Medical interns without credentials are not allowed to work in this program because of the potential risk.
Intern's responsibilities:
Interns will be placed under the direct supervision of one experienced, English-speaking doctor specializing in interns' respective, chosen medical field. This health care professional will work as your supervisor for the duration of your internship. You will initially learn about the medical system in China before spending time in various departments at the hospital in Binzhou. You'll also visit various specialized departments, spending one week in each of them, (depending upon your length of stay and preference) whilst observing and learning in the following departments:
- Cardiology
- Dentistry
- Emergency ward
- Medicine
- Nursing
- Oncology
- Ophthalmology
- Pediatrics
- Physiotherapy
- Surgery
- Traditional Chinese Medicine
All interns are expected to observe medical practices/procedures instead of hands-on experience (more involving roles may be permitted to interns with previous, relevant experience). For the duration of this internship, you will be provided a unique insight into traditional Chinese Medicine as well as major western medical practices. Also, interns will have the chance to become familiar with the local doctors and nurses as well as the patients.
Internship in China: Internship Project and Role of Supervisor
One of the most distinguished features of IFRE's internships in China is the guidance of supervisors. Whichever projects you choose, IFRE will assign a qualified supervisor to provide assistance for all interns throughout the duration of their chosen internship. Individuals filling the role of supervisor are usually either the director or chosen staff member of the project which interns choose. During your time as an international intern, you will be assigned a number of duties which volunteers also perform (in this sense, there are very few differences between IFRE's volunteers and interns).
Wherein exists the differences between interning and volunteering is that the internship allows individuals to become more deeply involved in their chosen project (individuals interning in the medical project can focus on a number of specialties: pediatrics, cardiology, oncology, traditional Chinese medicine). Please note: the project supervisor Does not develop internships as this is up to the intern to get as much or as little out of their projects. ALL participants should be proactive to ensure the ultimate success of their internships. Supervisors will provide at least five (5) hours each week to make certain that interns are adequately guided.
Room/Food:
IFRE places interns in various, local host families which may often be an intern's supervisor or a staff member of the hospital. Within these accommodations, interns are provide three (3) meals a day consisting of local Chinese cuisine. Interns also have numerous opportunities to help the locals in an assortment of ways (the Chinese people are always eager to learn English from a native English-speaker).
