Traditionally, this route is mainly used by the Gujjars (nomadic herdsmen) who graze their buffalo on the high meadows every summer. It is also frequented by Sadhus (Hindu pilgrims) on their way to the sacred shrine at Gangotri, the spiritual source of the Ganges.
From the valley the trek takes us to the beautiful wilderness area of Dodital Lake and the surrounding Alpine meadows. We continue past the lake over the Darwa Pass (4150 m) to the Yamuna River watershed. Traditionally, this route is mainly used by the Gujjars (nomadic herdsmen) who graze their buffalo on the high meadows every summer. It is also frequented by Sadhus (Hindu pilgrims) on their way to the sacred shrine at Gangotri, the source of the Ganges. This trip reaches an altitude of 4150 m. Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Delhi to Camp Kuflon (1550 m): 12hrs. Board the train to Dehradun leaving Delhi at 6:55 a.m. Arrive into Dehradun and transfer to Camp Kuflon. Located on the banks of the Bhagirathi river, it is a beautiful fixed camp and a great fishing spot. Overnight Camp.
Day 2: Camp Kuflon to Bevra (2400 m): 4/5 hrs. After breakfast depart for Bevra. The walk is eight km over about five hours following the Assiganga stream. We pass through Agoda Village to camp at Bevra. A dip in the stream in Bevra is the best way to wash out the first day's body aches.
Day 3: Bevra to Dodital (3310 m): 6/7 hrs. After and early morning breakfast we start walking to Dodital, a 16 km gradual walk. Dodital is a fresh-water lake set amidst thick jungle, containing brown trout and many other species of fish. Rhododendron Oak and Rhododendron trees are common on the trail and we also see some Seabuck thorn bushes. Beyond Bevra village there is no habitation except for the shepherd hut in Majhi.
Day 4: Dodital to Darwa Pass (4150 m) to Kanasar (3900 m): 4/5 hrs. The day starts with an uphill climb breaking into thick birch forests before opening into the high meadows. The pass at 4150 m offers a spectacular view of the snow capped Bandarpunch Range. We proceed to camp at Kanasar (3900 m) which is just below the Darwa Pass. Overnight Camp.
Day 5: Kanasar to Kandoli (2800 m): 6/7 hrs. A long traverse in the meadow below the pass with impressive views of the Banderpunch peaks brings one to the beautiful grazing ground of Seema. After lunch we begin our descent through the forest to the campsite at Kandoli. Overnight Camp.
Day 6: Kandoli to Hunumanchatti (2400 m) to Delhi. Trek two hours to reach the road-head at Hanumanchatti. Drive six hours to Dehradun to board the overnight Mussoorie Express to Delhi. We travel by A/C sleeper train, the most comfortable way to travel overland in India. Overnight on board.
Day 7: Arrival Delhi. Early morning arrival (6:00 a.m.) into Delhi. Trip ends.
