El Morado is only 80km(1.5hrs) from Santiago with an impressive Andean environment shaped by tectonic forces and running water. Trek 16km/5hrs round trip, starting at 1,900m and reaching San Francisco glacier at 2,700m. Optional thermal bath at Baños Colina.
Your Itinerary:
- 08:00 hrs: Pick up from the hotel in Santiago and drive 85km onwards the Andes across the Maipo river valley. On weekends the locals come out to the street to sell “Empanadas and Pan Amasado” the most typical country meal together with honey, home made marmalade and some wooden handcrafts. Once we pass the village of San Gabriel the road is steeper and dusty so the last 20km are kind of slow.
- 10:00 hrs: Arrive in El Morado Reserve nestled on foot of a spectacular mountain cirque with dramatic rock formations around and vertical plaques that drop over a crushing river. The hike considers some 16km/5hrs round trip starting at some 1.900m and aiming a small glacier lagoon at some 2.600m. Box lunch is served while on the horse ride. On spring the slopes are dotted with color bottoms belonging to many different species of wild flowers. Condors and small yellow birds (cometocino) are commonly seen as we hike up.
- 16:00-17:00 hrs: Reach the Park entrance and board the vehicle back to Santiago or venturing further up into Colina Hotsprings (the Colina Hotsprings extension requires previous booking). These are natural thermal pools coming from the heart of San Jose volcano that allow and outstanding bath amidst the most spectacular Andean setting. Because of its remote location and popularity among local miners is that we might come here only from October to mid December and from March to May. Road conditions may always prevent us from reaching this spot.
- 18:00- 19:00 hrs: Drive back to Santiago arriving at your hotel at 21:00- 22:00hrs.
* Departures: Departures are scheduled all year round. The best climate is from September to April. Best days are weekends when locals come out to streets and sell typical food and handcrafts. Colina Hot springs are open, depending on climate, normally from Nov- Apr. From 15th Dec-Feb hot springs are not recommendable as it gets very crowded, especially on weekends.
* Group Size and Guiding Staff: Guide to client ratio: 1/10.
* Transport: We use comfortable vans or cars for the activities and transfers.
* Weather: Central Chile enjoys an ideal Mediterranean climate, mild and temperate, the warmest months being November to February when temperatures reach 29ºC which is always very comfortable due to the lack of humidity. June to August are the coolest months with temperatures as low as 10ºC. In the high Andes, where the Horseback riding trip takes places, cool nights shall be expected (until -5ºC in summer) and hot and dry days (up to 32 ºC in summer) with fresh and sometimes strong winds
* Physical Demands: Easy – no horse-riding experience required.
* What you need to bring: Long pants, tennis or trekking shoes, sun lotion and lip balm, sun glasses, hat and rain coat (winter).
* The animals: The traveler will ride on Chilean horses that are, on average, shorter but not less strong than European ones. These animals are used to riding on rough and sloped terrain. Most of them are of daily use in many of the cattle duties so the best behavior shall be expected. The saddle, called Chilean saddle, has been adapted locally many years ago from Arab and Spanish saddles. It is lined in pork, cow or even carpincho leather that does not heat up in the sun and provides maximum comfort.
* Additional Information and References: Once you book the trip we will send you a pre-trip Information booklet with useful and detailed information about your trip with us. Not sure about us? We will be happy to provide you with references of satisfied past travelers.
