Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Elephant Riding at Ban Kiat Nguong Phouasa
Elephant Riding Bolivan PlateauWe depart from Pakse and head to the town of Ban Kiat Nguong. Here we will spend the morning in this elephant village and spend three hours trekking to a mountain temple where we have lunch. On our return to the village we may get the chance to see the elephants getting their daily bath. We continue to the town on Ban Muang.
From here it is a short boat ride on a Lao style car ferry, complete with livestock, over to Champasak. At Champasak we spend the night at the splendid Anuxa Hotel, and you are free to roam around the town of Champasak.
Day 2: Wat Phu and Wat Umuang
Take the short drive to Wat Phu. This Natural Heritage Site was built in the 6th century by the Khmer's and was originally used to worship the Hindu god Shiva and other deities before being converted into a Buddhist temple in later centuries. Wat Phu was considered the center of the Khmer kingdom until it was moved to Angkor Wat in the 12th century. Still an important monument today, it is visited by many people from around the world and every year hosts the three day Bun Wat Phu Champasak (Wat Phu Champasak Festival).
We stop for lunch and you will have plenty of time to explore the temple. Afterwards we head to another temple sitting in the middle of the jungle. Mid afternoon we head down the river by boat to the island of Don Khong. Here we spend the night at Sala Don Khong and prepare ourselves for our kayak adventure down the Mekong.
Day 3: Island Meander
Kayaking the Mekong RiverFrom here you have two options. The first option involves a boat trip down through the islands to finish up in Don Khone.
The second option is a day of kayaking to Don Khone. We leave from Don Khong and get into kayaks to meander through Si Phan Don, the 4000 islands of the Mekong river. We stop for lunch at a sandy beach before continuing on to Don Khone.
Day 4: Border Run
Two options again today: scenic boat trip to see the dolphins or white water rafting. We continue on the water today down to the Cambodia Border to see the rare Irrawaddy Dolphins. Only found in the Mekong here and in Cambodia, it is a wonderful chance to see one of the world's rarest creatures.
