It's day 3 of your Costa Rica vacation. You're deep in the heart of Corcovado National Park and have just spotted a spider monkey. She sits at eye-level on a low hanging branch of a cocobolo tree, nibbling a leaf, following you with dark, round eyes as you approach. When you're a few yards away, you stop and stare at each other, blinking. Time stands still. And then, in one graceful swoop, she's off, swinging effortlessly like a long-armed gymnast from branch to branch until she disappears into the forest.

Spider monkeys are a common site in Corcovado National Park, deemed "the most biologically intense place on Earth" by National Geographic. And while Corcovado is known as the "crown jewel" of Costa Rica, it's just one of many natural wonders in a country home to more species of wildlife and flora than any other place on the planet.

Travel Costa Rica and come face-to-face with spider, howler and white-faced monkeys. Hike jungle trails, Pacific beaches and ancient oak forests. Raft the wild and scenic Class IV Pacuare and pitch a deluxe camp on a secluded beach. Discover first hand how early indigenous hunters used the toxins from the tiny poison dart frog and reward yourself at the end of each active day with a good night's sleep in an exquisite hotel, tent camp or mountain lodge.

Accommodations:

Nights 1 - 8: Hotel Don Carlos
Located just a few blocks from the central plaza in downtown San Jose, this hotel was once an old Victorian-style mansion. It has 38 rooms, all with private baths, a bar, restaurant, sundeck, gym and souvenir shop. The hotel also offers an impressive collection of Costa Rican painting and sculptures.

Nights 2 - 4: Corcovado Lodge and Tent Camp
Corcovado Lodge and Tent Camp offers both a main palm-thatched lodge and a cozy bar/hammock room with twenty platform sleeping tents. Sleep between the pounding surf and the living wall of the jungle and enjoy all the comforts of home in a 10-sq. foot walled tent, 20 meters from the bathroom and shower. If you love truly remote, wild and beautiful places, Corcovado Lodge and Tent Camp is for you.

Nights 5 - 6: Savegre Mountain Lodge
Savegre Mountain Lodge boats 20 cabins at 7,200 feet above sea level. Perched on a family farm with a clear trout stream running through it, the Lodge is surrounded by one of the finest examples of highland cloud forest on the planet and is set in a valley so spectacular that a postcard photographer might pass it up because nobody would believe it was true. Cabinas Chacon and the surrounding private nature reserve provide all the basic comforts.

Night 7: Deluxe Pacuare River Camp
Deluxe camp with sleeping bags, pads, sheets and tents provided.
