This tour takes you from Port Elizabeth to the agricultural community of Graaff-Reinet and Craddock, the awe-inspiring sights of The Valley of Desolation, the Mountain Zebra National Park and also Addo Elephant Park. This fully guided tour with an experienced driver/guide departs from Port Elizabeth, also known as the “friendly city”. The port is situated in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa along the Sunshine Coast.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Port Elizabeth. Pick up at Port Elizabeth Airport and transferred to the harbor for a Breakfast Cruise at Algoa Bay as well as an Eco–cruise to see the endangered African Penguin. Later in the day, you will set out to visit the Bayworld Oceanarium and Snake Park to see the wonders of South African waters and reptiles. After a long day, check into your hotel, where you are booked on a bed and breakfast basis. The hotel is within walking distance to the city center and restaurants where you can go for dinner. Overnight and Breakfast at the Protea Edward Hotel.
Day 2: Alexandria - Dunefields - Addo. After breakfast, the tour departs for Dunefields Reserve at Alexandria – near Port Elizabeth – for a 3 hour excursion in an open Landcruiser over sand dunes. You can to take photos as you learn more about dunes history and geology. Experience the vastness and breathtaking wonder of the largest coastal dune field in the Southern Hemisphere. Lunch will be served in a tranquil setting. In the afternoon leave for Addo-Elephant Park to arrive in time for sundowners and an overnight stay. Dinner, bed and breakfast included.
Day 3: Addo-Elephant Park. After breakfast, the adventurous can go on a guided Horseback Safari in the Zuurberg Mountains where elephants and other wild animals roam freely. Those who don’t fancy the horse-back safari can opt for the Discovery Trail, covering a multitude of park related subjects and can also spend time in a large bird-hide overlooking a reeded wetland and view game at a waterhole. In the afternoon, go on a guided game drive inside the reserve with its 450 elephants and many other antelope, as well as the rest of the Big 5. Overnight again inside the reserve on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.
Day 4: Addo – Graaff-Reinet. After breakfast, set out to explore the semi-desert vegetation and mountainous region of the Great Karoo Destination. Graaff-Reinet – famously known as “The Gem of the Karoo”. This is a small town with great charm and historic interest. Visit the 16,500 ha of Karoo Nature Reserve, a feature unique in the world. The Valley of Desolation and Spandau Kop includes some of South Africa’s most dramatic sights where the elements and geological processes over millions of years have carved rocks into pinnacles and strange formations. In the afternoon, visit Nieu-Betesda. The fame of the tiny village rests on the legacy of eccentric artist Helen Martins who decorated her mystic sculptures and home, known as the Owl House, with crushed glass. You will never leave this venue with a lot of unanswered questions. Dinner and Overnight at the Drosdy Hotel, a 19th century slaves quarters.
Day 5: Graaff Reinet – Cradock. Breakfast is followed by a visit to some of the more than 200 monuments in this town, more than any other town in South Africa. Afterwards, you head on to Cradock where we visit the Mountain Zebra National Park –6000 hectares of sanctuary to the Cape Mountain Zebra and herds of eland, springbok, kudu, wildebeest, blesbok and red hartebeest. Overnight is at Die Tuishuise – a historic guesthouse accommodation. Die Tuishuise consists of 25 refurbished Karoo houses situated on one street and have received the South African gold medal for restoration. At Die Tuishuise, your stay is on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis, where dinner is served at the exquisite Victoria Manor.
Day 6: Port Elizabeth. After breakfast, you return to Port Elizabeth from where you will be dropped at the airport or at your hotel.
