From Lake Starnberg (near Munich) to the Royal Castles, using 4* hotels en route. This program is the mainstay of Coaching in Bavaria's various offerings. Carriages depart every Friday at 10.00 am from our farm 30 miles south of Munich, ending next Monday back at our farm at 6.00 pm. Guaranteed departures from mid-May to end-October. Breakfast is included, with lunch and dinner at your own expense. Transfer from, and back to, Munich (hotel, rail station, airport) on request.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Make your own way from Munich (or take advantage of our optional transfer at additional cost) to our first hotel in the vicinity of Lake Starnberg. You can relax at the hotel "Kaiserin Elisabeth" in Feldafing(optional), named after the Austrian Empress Sissi who spent her holidays from the Vienna Imperial Court here for more than 20 years. Dinner on your own in the lovely dining room (optional).
Day 2: Included breakfast at the hotel before you are transferred at 09.30 am to the Coaching in Bavaria farm located between Lake Starnberg and Lake Ammersee where you will meet your coachman and guide. Departure from the farm is 10.00 am via antique mail-coach. We drive down to the Ammer Valley, later up to the hills along the river. Lunchbreak is in the small farm village of Eberfing at a post inn: no mass tourism, just good Bavarian food. After lunch the mail-coach drives through open farm land and later through endless forests closer and closer to the mountains. Around 06.00 pm we arrive at the Parkhotel in Bayersoien where we stay the night. Beautiful hotel, a wonderful view of the mountains, surrounded by moorland and fens. Dinner on your own in the hotel.
Day 3: 09.30 am departure of the mail-coach from Parkhotel; follow the old Roman Road, the "Via Claudia Augusta" to drive through the small town of Saulgrub. Soon we reach the so-called "King's Road", where King Ludwig II. used to hasten from one castles to the other, mostly after midnight. This road is nearly in the same condition as 120 years ago. Around noon we arrive at the Wies church, the most beautiful rococo church in Germany. Here we have lunch in the former residence of the church builder, Dominikus Zimmermann. After lunch through lonely mountain forests, across mountain pastures with grazing herds of cattle and horses. We come to the lakes of Forggensee and Bannwaldsee with both the royal castles always within our sight. Finally, both castles are towering high above our mail-coach. Around 06.00 pm we arrive in Hohenschwangau to overnight in the Hotel "Mueller", with view of both castles. Dinner on your own in the hotel dining room with a lovely view of Neuschwanstein castle.
Day 4: Opportunity to visit one of the castles this morning. The mail-coach starts from Hohenschwangau around 11.00 am or later on agreement with the passengers. The route leads through open farm land and along the river Lech. Lunchbreak is in a small country inn near Prem (Gasthof "Lechaue") or, weather permitting, a picnic at the bank of the river. After lunch the carriage drives through moorlands and along dairyland, then through the Dosswald (= forest) near the town of Schongau. In this medieval town we stay the night near the market place in a cosy small hotel "Roessle". Plenty of time to walk around this little market town, where less than 200 years ago the last witch has been burned.
Day 5: The next morning the horses clip-clop on the cobble stones leaving Schongau. For the first few hours, dense forest and fens. After leaving the wooded area, we arrive at Wessobrunn, once the center of the craftsmen and artists who created all of the beautiful churches, monasteries, and castles in the area. We stop in front of a former Post relay station for a lunch break. Close to the inn there is a stone with the oldest written document in the German language, dating back to the year 814 A.C. After two hours, we leave Wessobrunn for the very last stage of our journey. We cross the Ammer River valley and climb up a steep road back into the forests around Kerschlach, the home of Coaching in Bavaria. Our arrival there is about 06.00 pm. Return transfer provided for final overnight (optional) in the lovely old-fashioned Hotel "Kaiserin Elisabeth" in Feldafing, where some 100 years ago the Austrian Empress Sissi spent holidays for more than 20 years. Dinner on your own.
Day 6: Tour program ends following buffet breakfast at the hotel. For those arriving by your own vehicle, you can continue on your journey. For all others, an optional transfer can be provided back to Munich to a hotel, the train station or Munich Airport.
