Iran supports some 7.000 plant species, of which about 20% are endemics. Most endemics are founded in mountains; centers of endemism include the peaks of the Alborz mountain, the mountain ridges south of Kashan and Yazd, and to the north and south of Kerman. The country also possesses a very rich and diverse bird fauna. So far, 491 species have been recorded. There are two main factors which are responsible for this diversity; the great range of habitats-from permanent snows to deep deserts and from lush deciduous forest in the north to palm groves and mangrove in the south, and Iran's position at a crossroads between three major faunal regions.
