Paint sketch, explore and relax on our voyage of discovery in the heart of La France Profonde. Welcom to the beautiful Périgord regiou of Southwest France, known too as the Dordogne. As we paint and sketch, we'll explore a land inhabited since prehistoric times. The pleasures of the table will be ours too, with local cuisine paired with wines of the region.
Tour Itinerary: Sept 1 - 9, 2009 THESE TOUR DATES ONLY, PLEASE!
Independent arrival in Bordeaux by 4 pm. Meet our private coach in Bordeaux for the 2 hour scenic drive to the Perigord and Petit Rousset. Welcome dinner and reception. Note this workshop ends in Toulouse.
Sept 2 - 9, 2009 Eymet - Our bastide 'hometown' is a 45 minute stroll from Petit Rousset past rows of grapevines, fields of sunflowers and meadows of grazing cows.
St. Emilion - A favorite of both medieval popes and English kings. In 1999, it was classed a world heritage site, the first vine-growing area to achieve this status.
Bergerac - the town made famous by the poet-Muskateer, Cyrano. We'll visit the Old Town with its medieval houses. Nearby is the fairy tale Chateau de Monbazillac.
Issigeac - A tiny medieval village, sleepy every day but Market Day when meandering streets and paths burst with activity.
Beaumont - A tiny bastide founded in 1275.
Beynac - We'll visit the chateau at its summit, which sits high atop a cliff dominating the Dordogne River.
Sarlat - Nearly all of Sarlat's restored town houses were built from 1450-1500, its years of greatest prosperity, giving Sarlat a rare architectural unity.
Monpazier - Hailed as the most perfectly preserved bastide in SW France, the 13th century houses, surrounding its market square are identical in size, unique in appearance.
Final Days - St. Cirq Lapopie/ Toulouse. Depart for St. Cirq Lapopie, a magical village, suspended on a cliff with a spectacular view overlooking the river. We'll overnight here and after an early lunch, depart for Grotto du Pech-Merle, one of the finest prehistoric painted caves still open to the public. After our guided visit, we depart for Toulouse airport and/or train station. Onward journeys from Toulouse after 4 pm please.
