The Mayo tour is like stepping back 20 years to an Ireland before the Celtic Tiger! You will get to visit the largest stone age site in Europe, an ancient cattle field system and also spend your rest day on Achill Island with its wonderful mountains and white sandy beaches as well as its breathtaking cliff walks.
This is also the country of Grainnuaile, a famous female pirate in the 16th Century whose ships attacked fleets all along the coastline and we visit one of her fortress houses. Finally we stop at a wonderful early Christian monastic site situated in a most peaceful setting, before heading back to Westport and the less mystical real world.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Westport - You meet up in a hotel, for a welcome drink from your guide.
Day 2: The Western Way - We follow the Western Way walking route for the first ten miles before heading to the village of Foxford where we stay the night.
Day 3: The Shores of Lough Conn - We continue by the shores of Lough Conn to the historical village of Killala where the French landed in 1798 spreading the French revolution to Irish revolutionaries.
Day 4: Ceide Fields Visitor Center - Heading along the coast to Belmullet, we stop en route in the Ceide Fields visitor centre, which explains a local archaeological survey of a prehistoric field system.
Day 5: Achill Island - One option is to cycle to Blacksod Bay and take a boat across to Achill Island. Alternatively, there is a spectacular cycle along the Atlantic coast road to Achill.
Day 6: Keel Village - Our guest houses are in the village of Keel, overlooking a dramatic beach.
Day 7: Return to Westport - We return by cycling along Clew Bay to the village of Newport where we stop for lunch. In the afternoon we return to Westport on the same western way on which we started the week.
Day 8: Departure Day - After a final breakfast you start your journey back home.
