The vast plains of Tsavo are crossed by the main Nairobi-Mombasa railroad. This historic railway was, in 1899, the scene of one of Africa's greatest Adventure stories. Two large lions actively preyed on the railway workers as they built a bridge over the Tsavo river, claiming over 120 victims. They evaded hunters for well over a year, and the legend of the Man eaters of Tsavo was born. The sheer scale of Tsavo gives the visitor a chance to really get away from it all, and to explore the wild in total solitude. On safari here you will see large herds of Elephant, their hides often a luminous red with dust, as well as Lion, Buffalo, Eland, Giraffe Impala, Kudu and possibly Rhinoceros. Tsavo is a birdwatcher's paradise with numerous species of weavers, horn bills, sun birds, rollers, and raptors commonly seen. Due to close proximity to the coast, its then combined with a beach holiday in Mombasa for relaxation.
Active travelers may take short day tours of the historic Fort Jesus as well as tours of beautiful Mombasa Old Town which boasts historic Swahili and Arabic architecture. Or you can partake in water sports including catamaran rides, canoe rides, glass bottomed boat snorkeling trips and windsurfing and deep-sea fishing. Perhaps you just want to relax. We can also arrange a few days on the island of Lamu, Kenya's oldest continuously inhabited town. Lamu is an island located off the coast of Kenya with a rich Swahili and Muslim heritage. Explore Lamu's unique architecture. Most buildings date back to the 18th century or before. Buildings utilize local materials including coral-rag blocks for the walls, wooden floors supported by mangrove poles, makuti roofs, and intricately carved shutters for windows.
