Bird Island on the West Coast is home to a colony of 14,000 Cape Gannets, aggressive seabirds that live packed tightly together, fighting most the time! The noise and smell are something else but it is certainly an amazing spectacle. The tidal flats and wetlands of the Berg River and the Rocherpan Reserve also offer excellent viewing. The World of Birds in Cape Town houses over 330 different species of indigenous and exotic birds in spacious and tropical landscaped walk-through aviaries offering wonderful photographic opportunities.
There are a few well known bird sanctuaries in and around the Cape Town area, for example, Strandfontein Settlement Ponds the 5th most important wetland in South Africa in terms of numbers of birds supported. Here you will see Greater Flamingo, Purple Gallinule, Avocet, African Spoonbill, Grebes, Egrets, Stilts and many other wetland species. Half day and full day tours available with a knowledgeable guide to all these areas. Many of the Nature Reserves also offer excellent bird watching opportunities. Notes:
