This tour is a perfect choice for your first cross-country skiing holiday in Finland! The guided hut-to-hut tour goes along the Eastern Border winter trail right on the Russian border taking you through wilderness areas with pristine untouched nature. We will have lunch at the Hossa Visitor Centre, where we can also take a look at the exhibition on the area. In the afternoon we can relax in the traditional Finnish sauna and the more adventurous among us can even try ice swimming. At night we will visit a local reindeer farm where we will enjoy a delicious dinner and of course, learn about reindeer herding today. Day 3 Rajakartano – Kovavaara 25 km The longest skiing day of the week starts on the tracks of Hossa and then follows border guard’s trails towards south. We will cross many small mires and ski through some ancient forests. Slightly before the midway point, at Vieremäjärvi, we can have some rest and enjoy a picnic lunch around an open fire. Hot coffee and soup will be prepared and served with sandwiches. Accommodation for the next night will be in a rustic old house on the top of the hill Kovavaara. There are no modern comforts in the house but in exchange the history and lifestyle of 1950's are untouched. Day 4 Kovavaara – Arola 19 km The third skiing day follows the Russian border zone. The yellow border zone marks are our guides for the whole day and we can see to the Russian side from several points. In the afternoon we will arrive at Arola situated just a stone’s throw from the Russian border. Arola is famous for delicious food made by our hostess Helena out of local ingredients. The dinner will be served in a traditional log house. Day 5 Arola – Martinselkonen Wilderness Centre 20 km Today´s route passes through the Martinselkonen nature reserve through open marsh and spruce forests following paths of reindeer. We will have a picnic lunch at one of the wilderness huts operated by Finnish Forest and Park Service. The accommodation for the last two nights will be at Martinselkonen Wilderness Centre, another former border guard station renovated into a modern guest house. Day 6 Day tour at Martinselkonen 17 km On the last skiing day we will make a day tour in Martinselkonen nature reserve.
