This self-guided cycling tour leads the cyclist along peaceful, well-maintained roads from the woodland-covered Kainuu hills to Oulu on the west coast through sandy beaches of Lake Oulujärvi and Ostrobothnia’s verdant cultivated terrain. The route goes mostly along the Tar Trail which is one of the nine official Finnish tourist routes following the ancient water, tourist and transportation route along the River Oulujoki from the city of Oulu to Kajaani. A significant part of the journey is cycled in close proximity to Lake Oulujärvi which is especially present in Mananmansalo island which landscape is dominated by beautiful pine heaths and long sandy beaches. Several days will be cycled in the area of Rokua Geopark which is Finland’s only and the northernmost Geopark of the UNESCO network. In Rokua it is also possible to visit a National Park.

Accommodation on this tour varies from small hotels to camping cabins each of them offering a good night’s sleep and delicious dining.

Tour highlights:

* Lake Oulujärvi – the 4th biggest lake in Finland
* Manamansalo island
* Finnish countryside
* Rokua Geopark – world’s northernmost Geopark

Tour itinerary:

Day 1 Arrival at Kajaani
Arrival at Kajaani airport and transportation to the hotel for dinner. Your guide will meet you at the airport and provide further information on your journey.

Day 2 Kajaani – Paltaniemi – Paltamo approx. 61 km
During the first day of the tour you will be cycling amidst country settings along quiet tarmac roads and well-maintained gravel roads via charming village of Paltaniemi to Paltamo. In Paltaniemi it is possible to visit the church famous for its ceiling and wall paintings.

Day 3 Paltamo – Manamansalo approx. 54 km
Today you will head towards the island of Manamansalo. A good place for lunch break could be an old Hakasuo mil which is also the start point for a 6 km long nature trail. Upon arriving at Manamasalo, you will proceed to Kultahiekat (Golden Sands) camping site at the southern-most tip of the island. Accommodation is in two-person cabins right on the shores of Lake Oulujärvi.

Day 4 Manamansalo – Säräisniemi approx. 37 km
The first kilometres you will cycle amidst lichen heaths and clear-water ponds to Alassalmi, where you will take a ferry over the strait to the mainland. After the ferry-ride you will take a northbound course towards the village of Säräisniemi which is one of the oldest inhabited villages in the area.

Day 5 Säräisniemi – Rokua approx. 30 km
After breakfast the route continues via the Vaala municipality towards Rokua. You can stop at Lamminaho House Museum along the way, offering an insight into everyday life in the area during the 19th century. In Rokua, the northernmost Geopark of the UNESCO network, you can study the landforms shaped by the Ice Age: glacial ridges, pine and lichen heaths, kettle holes and small ponds filled with crystal clear water. Rokua has also a National Park and numerous marked trails in the area offer an outstanding opportunity for hiking.

Day 6 Rokua – Merilä Manor approx. 41 km
The first leg of today’s journey advances through the hilly terrain of Rokua but then suddenly, the road begins to run smoothly and the landscape undergoes a transformation as you reach the open fields of Ostrobothnia. Oulujoki River is crossed by way of a suspension bridge. The route trails along the northern riverside banks amidst rural views all the way through Utajärvi parish village, which lies only five kilometres from your accommodation, Merilä Manor.

Day 7 Merilä Manor – Hotel Vihiluoto approx. 66 km
On the last day the route continues through an open rural landscape along narrow tarmac roads. It does not go unnoticed that this is one of the most significant potato growing areas in Finland. The population becomes denser as one approaches Oulu and the airport, situated only four kilometres from Hotel Vihiluoto, where dinner and accommodation are provided. The hotel is located in a tranquil spot by the sea.

Day 8 Return
Breakfast and transfer to Oulu airport.
