Kanchanjunga means the mountain of jewels. It is said that the famous sage Guru Padmasambhava buried the treasures of knowledge in this most beautiful of mountains. It is so revered by the locals that the Lamas of Sikkim do an annual tribute dance to this sacred peak. The wild flowers are in full bloom during the months of April and May, and clear views of the mountains are also more likely during this period. Much more than trek, it is a journey of discovery. Breathtaking views of the vast Himalayan range can be seen from the majority of the route's trails. This is a sparsely populated area with mainly Sherpa, Limbu, Rai and Gurung communities. The people are not accustomed to receiving tourists at their doorsteps and show great hospitality.
For an all-round trekking experience a visit to either, or both, base camps of Kanchenjunga, at 8586 meters, the third highest mountain on earth, is always possible but our experience recommends to make the both base camps in a single trip. Once you arrive in the higher parts of Kanchenjunga, you will find a great masses of Himalayan peaks surrounded by a number of peaks lesser in height but no less attractive. Day 10: Trek Khambachen. Day 11: Rest/ acclimatization day in Khambachen. Day 12: Trek Lhonak via Lhonak glacier (15,680'). Day 13: Lhonak, day hike Pangpema (16,900'). North base camp. Day 14: Trek - forest camp. Day 15: Trek Ghunsa along Tamur River. Day 16: Trek Sinion - Margin La. Day 17: Trek Yalung, cross Lapsang La (16,760') or Margin La (15,300). Day 18: Trek Ramche (14,000). Day 19: Rest/ acclimatization; exploration South BC. Day 20: Trek Tseram. Day 21: Trek - forest camp. Day 22: Trek Yamphudin. Day 23: Trek Funfun. Day 24: Trek Kunjari. Day 25: Trek Taplejung - Suketar. Day 26: extra day for weather, acclimatization, rest, etc. Day 27: Early morning flight to Biratnagar, then on to Kathmandu.
