Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Lima - Huaraz.
We leave from Lima by bus at night, the next day we arrive at Huaraz.
Day 2: Lake De Llanganuco – Callejon De Huaylas.
Upon arrival in Huaraz you will be transferred to your hotel. Then we will visit ‘EL Callejón de Huaylas’, with its typical towns like Carhuaz and Yungay. In addition, you will see the beautiful turquoise lagoon of Llanganuco, and the majestic and mystic snow-capped mountain Huascaran. Huascaren is the highest mountain in Peru and second highest in the Americas, adorned with high Andean prairies where "Ichu", a high altitude type of grass grows.
Day 3: Laguna De Churup/Ruinas De Wilchuain.
Today we travel towards to Pitec, which is 17 kms from Huara and on the way to the “White Mountain Range” or Cordillera Blanca. We will follow the left bank of the Quilcay River and begin our trek at approximately 3,900 m above sea level. 4 kms beyond this point we find the impressive Churup. This snow capped peak and the beautiful Churup lake (one of the most beautiful in the “Callejon de Huaylas”) is characterized by crystalline waters in which the snow-capped peak is reflected. On the way back to Huaraz, we visit the Wilcahuain Pre-Inca archaeological remains.
Day 4: Chavin De Huantar.
Today we will visit the ancient temple of Chavin de Huántar, where we will appreciate the beautifully carved Piedra del Lanzón ("Stone ofLanzón"), a 13-foot-high carved white granite stele at the meeting point of four underground tunnels in the Castillo (or castle). The Lanzon, the supreme deity of Chavin de Huantar has the head of the feline deity of Chavin de Huantar and the human body of the shaman of the pre-Chavin period. 3000 years ago, the innovative Chavin builders engineered the Castillo with underground ducts for natural air conditioning. Placed in the walls throughout Chavin de Huántar, the carved stone Cabezas Clavas ("nail-heads", with a peg extending behind the head) represented guardian deities, combining features of a bird with a jaguar or puma. In Chavín cosmology, the puma represents a creator god with earthly power and the falcon or eagle represented the sun and celestial forces. Finally, in this temple you can admire the stone of Choquechinchay.
Day 5: Nevado Pastoruri – Puya De Raymondi.
Today we discover ice caves and also massive glaciers. We will have an impressive vista of the Pastorury snow-capped peak. From here and we will get to know more about the "Puya de Raymondi" (or “Puya raimondii”). It is the largest known bromeliad, forming a rosette of long, tough and waxy leaves around 3 meters high and reaching 10 to 12 metres when in flower. This rare plant holds the record for the longest time to flower. Legend has it that the plant takes 150 years to flower, where upon it dies without forming offspring. More recent estimates reduce the time for maturity to between 80 and 100 years. We also visit the impressive lake of Pumashimin with its tranquil blue waters. Then we will return to Huaraz, and at night take our bus back to Lima.
