We suggest you arrive in Panama at least one day before vessel departure. You will be met at Tocumen International Airport by our representatives and transported to your hotel. You will be able to enjoy the cafes, restaurants, bars and night life of this bustling Latin city.
Ground transfers and 1 night accommodation in 3 star category hotels are included in your package.
At 6.30 am you will be met by our guide at the arranged meeting points at hotels in Panama City. Our guide will accompany you on the coach ride to Puerto Mutis, a small inter-tidal river port in the province of Veraguas. This journey takes around 3.5 hours. On arrival, a 30 minute transfer by tender to MV. Yemaya, at anchor amongst the ancient mangrove forests of the Gulf of Montijo, a Ramsar Site, recognized for its international importance for Marine Birds. Once aboard, we will pick up anchor and cruise to our first destination, the Park Ranger Station on Coiba Island. During this cruise, lunch will be served. You will have time to settle into your cabin, prepare your dive and camera equipment. We will introduce our crew and deliver briefings on safety aboard MV. Yemaya and an introduction to the dive deck and dive program aboard.
Check Out Dive/S:
Our afternoon check out dive/dives will be at sites at Frijoles or Isla Rancheria, in the heart of the Coiba National Park. These dives will give you opportunity to test your dive gear, weighting and camera system, and an insight to ocean conditions and the beauty and abundance of the marine environment of the Coiba and Gulf of Chiriquí region. We take the time on these dives to prepare for a great week of diving.
Day 2: Pinnacles and Reefs of Isla Canales de Afuera
Early AM we will pick up anchor and move MV. Yemaya to the idyllic natural lagoon formed by the islands of Canales de Afuera. Two morning deeper pinnacle dives, followed by an afternoon and night dive on one of the islands numerous reefs. These islands are frequented by Giant Mantas and Devil Rays.
Day 3: Pinnacles and Reefs of Northern Coiba Island, Isla Rancheria and Punta Hermosa.
Our AM dives, take in two of the Coiba National Park’s signature dive sites in the morning. On completion of the morning dive schedule we will cruise south, down the western side of Coiba Island, to Punta Hermosa for the afternoon dive. If conditions are favourable, we will also schedule a night dive for this evening. Today’s dives offer an opportunity to encounter, white tip shark, turtles, schooling rays, frog fish and sea horses along with many schools of reef and pelagic fish and possible Manta encounters.
Day 4: Hannibal Bank and The Sea Mounts and Pinnacles of Jicaron and Jicarita.
Before breakfast MV Yemaya we pick up anchor and head south down the western shores of Coiba Island. Towards the mysterious islands of Jicaron and Jicarita. Our choice of destination will depend on weather and ocean conditions. If conditions permit, we will make a drift dive over one of the worlds most famous sea mounts, the Hannibal Bank. The shallowest point of the bank is 157 ft / 48 m, dropping abruptly to over 5900 ft / 1800 m. We will stay within recreational dive limits and drift along the shallowest point. Large schools of Barracuda form chimneys around divers. Giant Amber Jack and Snapper, White Tip and the occasional Galapagos and Tiger Shark frequent this area along with some large examples of the Black Tip shark.
Jicaron and Jicarita
The mysterious islands of Jicaron and Jicarita offer encounters with schools of Tuna and Cubera Snapper and huge schools of reef fish. This area has an amazing abundance of corals, sponges, sea fans and marine life and frequented occasionally by small schools of Scalloped Hammerheads.
The 2 morning dives are on pinnacles close to the drop off, followed by an afternoon dive on a shallower pinnacle. Night dives will be programmed here when conditions are favourable. Jicaron and Jicarita are affected by the major ocean currents that sweep the marine corredor, bringing in a large variety of marine life.
Day 5: Travel Day, En-route to Isla Malpelo.
Early AM we pick up anchor and set of in route for Isla Malpelo, aiming for an early AM, first light, arrival the following day at Malpelo. Approx 24 hours of navigation. After a full dive schedule around Coiba, its time to relax, check your images and camera gear, look for dolphins, take some sun and enjoy the hospitality of MV Yemaya and her crew as we steam south to Malpelo Island
Day 6: Malpelo Island.
Early morning arrival at Isla Malpelo. We leave at 8 am to make our check out dive on one of the easier dive sites at Isla Malpelo. After wards, taking in 2/3 more of Malpelo’s famous signature dive sites. 3/4 Dives at Malpelo Island.
Day 7: Malpelo Island. 3/4 Dives at Malpelo Island.
Day 8: Malpelo Island. 3/4 Dives at Malpelo Island.
On the afternoon of Day 8 and on completion of a full days dive agenda, our crew will secure MV Yemaya for departure and the overnight cruise north to the Bay of Panama and Panama City. (Choice of dive sites and number of daily dives at Malpelo will depend on sea state and weather conditions)
Day 9. Travel Day. En route for the Bay of Panama, Panama City.
Time to pack your dive gear and camera equipment, kick back and relax as we cruise north into Panamanian waters, passing the islands of the Archipelago of Las Perlas in the Bay of Panama, famous for Humpback, Tropic and Blue Whale sightings. Arriving at our mooring on the Panama Canal at the Balboa Yacht Club, Panama City in the early evening. Dinner will be served aboard. Our guests will have the opportunity to go ashore and enjoy some of the restaurants and night life of this vibrant Latin city.
Day 10: Early morning breakfast. Our crew will assist to transport you and your luggage ashore for final departure from Yemaya in Panama City.
*Note. Coiba-Malpelo expedition featured is of nine nights duration. Some Coiba-Malpelo expeditions are of 12 nights duration, with more time spent in each location.
