Phangna province is one of the most beautiful areas in southern Thailand. Situated on the shore of the Andaman Sea, it is home to beautiful natural surrounding including forests and rubber plantations and a wide variety of indigenous wildlife. One of the best ways to explore this area is by river either in an outboard motor-equipped dinghy or by canoe. This is the perfect time to get in touch with nature before boarding a Burmese junk boat built in the classic style for an unforgettable lunch as you travel to an isolated beach for swimming and other water-related activities.
Another aspect of this tour that will bring you closer to nature is the accommodation, as you will spend the night in a tent and get a morning wake up call from the neighbouring birds and gibbons. Then it's time for a close encounter with one of Thailand's national symbols when you visit an elephant camp, a unique conservation project that combines wildlife protection and good times for a unique and educational experience. The mahouts (the men who care for the elephants) will demonstrate how they bathe the animals and give you a fascinating insight into their daily routines. No trip to an elephant camp would be complete without a chance to climb on top of one of these gentle giants and trek through the thick rain forest.
This tour ends with another canoe trip - this time down the Sok River and into another dense rain forest. Little has changed in this area over the past thousand years and as your paddle touches the water, you can reflect on what a truly beautiful place Thailand is.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Phuket / Krabi - Elephant Hills.
This excursion begins as soon as you're picked up from your hotel (either in Phuket, Krabi or Surat Thani) and transferred to the Phangnga province, catching glimpses of rural life and rubber and oil palm plantations along the way. Once there, you'll explore the rivers that cut through the mangrove forest by an outboard motor-equipped dinghy with the option to get closer to nature by taking a silent journey into a dense green world and exploring smaller creeks in self paddle canoes (with available life jackets).
As you emerging further along the coast, you'll meet up with a classical Burmese junk boat. Enjoy a quick Thai lunch before spending the rest of the afternoon on a deserted beach swimming, relaxing or canoeing until a late afternoon transfer to Khao Sok for dinner and tent accommodations. Overnight at Elephant Hills, Khao Sok. Includes: (L, D).
Day 2: Elephant Hills - Phuket / Krabi / Surat Thani.
If you ever wanted to wake up to the sounds of gibbons and birds calling from bushes close to your tent, well today is your lucky day. After breakfast, you'll be transferred to an elephant camp to learn about their lives, a conservation project to help them and the duties of a mahout, the man who takes care of these beautiful beasts.
Complete your experience by climbing aboard the elephants back as they trek through the rain forest. Following a buffet lunch, take a canoe trip down the Sok River to experience some of the last areas of primary rain forest (and a world that has changed little in thousands of years) before an afternoon transfer to your original destination.
