Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Santiago de Chile:
Upon arrival at the international airport in Santiago, and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy a city tour of the capital's highlights. Overnight Santiago.
Day 2: Lake District:
Morning flight (one-hour) to Temuco, the capital of the Araucania Region and home to the Mapuche. After a short city tour, including the colorful fruit and vegetable market, drive to the resort town of Pucón. Pucón attracts visitors from all over the world and has a gorgeous location. In the afternoon visit the falls of Caburga. Overnight near Pucón.
Day 3: Hiking in Huerquehue National Park and Hot Springs:
Today is your first full day excursion to Huerquehue, one of Chile's oldest national parks. Walk through a dense native forest of coigue, lenga and araucaria trees, with views of the smoking Villarrica Volcano and the extinguished Choshuenco Volcano. After two hours, arrive at three pristine lagoons, hidden among immense araucaria trees. After the hike relax in one of the natural hot springs outside the national park. Overnight near Pucón.
Day 4: Crossing the Andes to San Martín de los Andes (Argentina):
Today we will experience the natural contrasts between the Chilean and Argentinean slopes of the Andes. Crossing the Andes the countryside changes dramatically. Green rolling farmland and lush native forests in the Villarrica National Park are replaced by the dry but colorful Pampa of the Lanín National Park. The immense Lanín Volcano is a constant point of reference during the trip. On the pass drive through a spectacular araucaria forest. In the afternoon reach San Martín de los Andes situated on Lake Lacar. Overnight San Martín de los Andes.
Day 5: Crossing National Parks to Hot Springs at Puyehue (Chile):
Today travel through Lanín and Nahuel Huapi National Parks (Argentina) during a scenic drive through the Seven Lake District. Next, cross the Andes to return to Chile. The famous Hotel & Hot Springs Puyehue in the Puyehue National Park on the border with Argentina will be our accommodation for the night.
Day 6: Puyehue National Park to Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park:
Drive around Lake Llanquihue today, the third largest in South America. Stop in Frutillar, a charming town on the banks of the lake, celebrated for its 19th century German architecture. Continue driving around Lake Llanquihue, with constant views of Osorno Volcano. Dinner and overnight in the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park on the shores of Lake Todos los Santos.
Day 7: Hiking in Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park:
Discover Chile's oldest national park today and hike on the Paso de la Desolacion, which will take you to Cerro La Picada. During the ascent enjoy fantastic views of Lake Todos Los Santos and the volcanoes Osorno, Tronador, Calbuco and Puntiagudo. Also have the opportunity to observe local flora and fauna. The descent takes you to Playa Larga where a swim in the lake is a refreshing reward. Overnight national park.
Day 8: Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas:
Early transfer to the airport in Puerto Montt. Arrive in Punta Arenas, the southernmost town on the continent and starting point into the heart of Patagonia. Short city tour, which will include views of the famous Strait of Magellan that separates the continent from the island Tierra del Fuego, and a stop at the penguin colony at Otway Sound. See the colony of Magallan penguins, as well as animals like the Patagonian fox, ñandús (South American ostrich) and condors. Overnight nearby ranch.
Day 9: Torres del Paine National Park:
After breakfast visit one of the most spectacular national parks in the world, Torres del Paine. Pass through the typical Pampa steppes of the Magellan Region. Before arriving at the internationally renowned Torres del Paine National Park in late afternoon, visit the Milodón Cave where scientists have discovered the remains of a giant sloth. Overnight in the park.
Day 10: Torres del Paine National Park:
This full-day excursion will include visits to Lago Grey with its imposing glacier, the Salto Grande ("big waterfall"), Salto Chico and the administration center. Short hiking excursions will allow you to observe various kinds of animals: guanacos, flamingos, ñandús, condors, among others. Have a picnic on the way. Overnight in the park.
Day 11: Crossing the Patagonian Steppe to El Calafate (Argentina):
After breakfast drive to the border village and estancia Cerro Castillo to cross into Argentina. Continue through a deserted Patagonian landscape until you arrive at the town of El Calafate on the shores of the immense Lake Argentina. Overnight in or near El Calafate.
Day 12: Los Glaciares National Park:
Full day excursion into the Los Glaciares National Park, where a visit to the Perito Moreno Glacier will be the highlight of your day. This glacier is one of the few in the world that is still growing. Approaching as close as possible, observe it from all angles. After a nice picnic with great views of the glacierm hike in the national park. There is the option of a short hike on the glacier with an expert local guide. Overnight in or near El Calafate.
Day 13: El Calafate to Puerto Natales (Chile):
Cross the pampa to Chile, with a picnic on the way. You might see guanacos, ñandús or even flamingos on the way. Arrive at Puerto Natales on the shores of Ultima Esperanza Fjord ("Last Hope Fjord"). Overnight Puerto Natales.
Day 14: Santiago de Chile:
Return to Punta Arenas and flight back to Santiago. Overnight Santiago.
Day 15: Home:
Transfer to the international airport in Santiago for your flight home.
