The low-income class district of Cidade de Deus is situated on the west part of Rio de Janeiro, right behind the high middle class neighborhood Barra da Tijuca. This district is different from the favelas in general in Rio, it appeared as residential district built by the government to shelter homeless people due to storm and flooding occurred in the end of the sixties. The local was initially designed to shelter around fifteen thousand people, which nowadays this number surpasses more than fifty thousand inhabitants.By the almost total absence of the government and the lack of social investments, the district became one of the poorest and one of the most violent of Rio. After the making of the film Cidade de Deus based on the romance of the writer Paulo Lins (grew up in the district) the district became well known internationally.
