Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: We leave Muscat and head to Wadi Bani Khalid, Oman’s best loved wadi. There is some time to relax and enjoy a swim. Late afternoon we head into the Wahiba Sands desert. After checking into the Desert Nights Resort we head up to the top of a sand dune for our first sunset in the desert.
Day 2: This morning we head out across the sand dunes as we begin our 4x4 traverse of the Wahiba Sands desert, made famous by the explorer Wilfred Thesiger. It is amazing to see the terrain and vegetation of the dunes change, and as we go along the guides will explain some of the history and mystique of these expansive sands. Lunch today will be served in the heart of the desert. We continue on through the desert to Ras Al Ruez where the desert meets the sea. We continue on down the coast a short distance to our first camp which is already laid out with drinks. Enjoy views of the ocean as dinner is served on the beach.
Day 3: There is an opportunity for those looking to see more of the country to go and explore Masirah Island or partake in some bird watching amongst the reeds and marshland in the Bay of Mahawt with the experienced guides. Or for those simply looking to relax, we head straight to the fantastic Khaluf Bay Camp. The group can choose different options and picnic lunches will be provided.
Day 4: The morning is free to relax in the beautiful settings of Khaluf Bay. After lunch we head north towards Nizwa, where we step back in time and wander around the old deserted village of Birkat Al Mawz, situated at the foot of the Hajar mountain range. Tonight we relax in the comforts of a 4* hotel in Nizwa.
Day 5: Nizwa is the capital of the interior region and here we are able to visit its historic fort and famous souq. We head out to Bahla and Jabreen to view their impressive forts before heading up Jebal Shams which, at 3000 metres, is Oman’s highest mountain. For those interested in a bit of trekking there is a short walk of about two hours, around parts of the biggest canyon in the area, Wadi Nakhir. Tonight we relax in the comfort of a 4* hotel in Nizwa.
Day 6: After breakfast we head out to the villages that are nestled at the foot of the Hajar mountain range. Tanuf is famous for its supply of spring water to the region, and Misfah Al Breen is famous for its date production. This morning we have the opportunity to explore these picturesque Falaj villages before we drive across country to the Empty Quarter, stopping en route for a picnic lunch. The Empty Quarter is like nowhere else with mile after mile of amazing sand dunes some reaching 250m in height. We are welcomed at our luxury camp with sundowners on top of one of the dunes.
Day 7: This morning we leave and head north east to the town of Ibri, an old caravan town. We spend the morning exploring the fort and the traditional souq before heading to a local restaurant for lunch. We continue on to the main road which winds itself through the mountains to Rustaq and Nakhal. Here we can explore their forts and water springs. We will spend the night at a 4* resort in Barka.
Day 8: The morning is free to relax and enjoy all the facilities at the resort. Additional nights and later transfers for those that want to stay here longer can be arranged, but the bulk of us drive back to Muscat after lunch.
