El Perú-Waká and the Scarler Macaw trail is run by the Maya-Keq'chí community of Paso Caballos on the banks of beautiful San Pedro River in north-west Petén, Guatemala. The trip includes land transportation and motor boat service on the San Pedro River, camping equipment, all meals, purified water and local guide and assistans in Spanish.
El Perú-Waká archaeological site represents a well known breeding ground and offers visitors the unique opportunity to observe the endangered Ara macao or Scarlet Macaw bird. Your visit to this protected area helps to redefine the value of the birds creating and creates a consciousness for the preservation of standing forests, thus making it difficult for poachers to maneuver.
Day 1
The tour begins in Paso Caballos, in a agricultural Quekchí community located 80 Km. northwest of Flores, Petén. From there, we embark on a journey down Rio San Pedro, a sanctuary of flora and fauna. We land at El Perú archeological site and hike for about 40 minutes until we reach camp where we will setup for the night. Hammocks, mosquito nets and latrines will be provided.
Day 2
After rising early, preparing breakfast, and packing lunch, we leave for the archeological site of El Perú. From the base camp, it is another 30 minute hike to Jobontun Cave, which we can also explore before continuing on to el Mirador de los Monos (the Monkeys' Lookout.) The lookout is an old, overgrown Maya temple perched on top of a small mountain in the midst of the vast jungle. The views of Laguna El Perú and the surrounding jungle are spectacular!
While descending from the temple, our trail meanders through dense, tree-canopy tropical jungle and overgrown Maya ruins before spilling into the main plaza of the El Perú ruins. Here we eat lunch and explore all four plazas, which have fascinating estelae and small ruins. Abundant wildlife inhabits this area, including toucans, howler and spider monkeys and wild turkeys. Scarlet Macaws can be seen in the nesting period running from February to June.
Day 3
After breakfast, we break camp and go back to the riverbank. We'll head East, to the headwaters of San Pedro River, towards Paso Caballos. When the tour finishes, a car will be waiting to take us back to the city of Flores. English, French and German speaking guides are also available at an additional cost per day.
